| Administrative History: The Patrick and Beatrice
Haggerty Museum of Art opened on November 11, 1984, with Curtis L. Carter as museum
director and chief curator. The museum serves the educational and aesthetic purposes in
the university, the community, and the region. Its purposes include developing,
preserving, interpreting and exhibiting a permanent art collection; conducting educational
programs such as exhibitions, lectures, symposia, performances, and workshops; publication
of scholarly and educational works such as catalogs, pamphlets, videos, and films; and
providing internships, docent training, and related forms of museum education. Selected Works, the first comprehensive catalog of the Universitys permanent art collection, was published in 1984. Haggerty News: Newsletter of the Haggerty Museum of Art began publication in 1986. Over the years, the museum has developed various groups to support its programs and broaden its influence in the greater Milwaukee community. The Haggerty Museum Friends was established in 1985. Officers include the president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary. These officers constitute the Executive Committee. In addition to the Executive Committee, standing committees have included Membership, Docent, Program, Museum Shop, House, and Development Committees. The Haggerty Art Associates, a group of young adult Haggerty Museum supporters, was developed in 1991. Restrictions: Access to these records is unrestricted.
