Princess of the Mohawks, a Lakota Mission School Play, South Dakota, 1938


Princess of the Mohawks.

 

ca. 1938:  " ... When I was in third grade ... maybe twelve years old, I learned about her and we used to pray, pray to her ... I always thought she was a saint already because we used to pray lots to her and they used to have programs ... They used to call her Lily, Lily of the Mohawks and they [had] ... little plays about her."

Kathryn Clairmont (Lakota)

ca. 1939:  " ... I had to be about seven years old, I think that it was in 1939 that they put on a play in Holy Rosary, it's all with the students. We participated in it and that's when I learned of her. And she's always been ... coming up ... praying to, interceding ..."

Phyllis DeCory (Lakota)

1939:  Tekakwitha Conference established. Founded in North Dakota and developed into an association of Catholic Indian missionaries.

1943:  Declared venerable by Pope Pius XII.

1950s:  " ... [I] always saw statues around at school ... and they were just, like part of the furniture. But I remember hearing Kateri's name from the older girls that were there in school ... I don't remember if there was a Kateri group or-- I don't think so. Later, I remember looking back at the annuals and seeing ... that her statue was right there all the time."
