Kateri Tekakwitha Among the Laguna, New Mexico

Among the Laguna.

" ... I find among a lot of Native peoples their whole thing is Blessed Kateri is already a saint as far as they're concerned. So we're just waiting for official recognition of the fact. I hope it comes soon, I think it will help a lot of people in the Church."

Father Diego Mazon, O.F.M. (Zuni)

" ... We need an Indian saint regardless of what tribe she comes from, and I still pray to her [Kateri Tekakwitha]. And I believe she has performed many miracles for me. That's my way of thinking, and I have told stories and stories about how I've prayed to her, and how she's helped me in many different ways."

Cecilia Montgomery (Lakota)

"I have her picture right there in my wall in front of my bed. And my kids tease me because I have Kateri, I have the crucifix, I have Our Lady of Guadalupe. I have all kinds of stuff like that on my wall. And then when they go by my wall, they say, 'Boy, by gosh, you can't be [a] witch in this room.'"

Anna Marie Sandoval (Navajo)
