Sources on Campus History Topics

Founded in 1881, Marquette University has a rich, fascinating history. From the glory days of Marquette football to the establishment of co-ed residence halls, there are dozens of intriguing stories to investigate.

The Department of Special Collections and University Archives preserves more than 20 million original documents about the institution's past.  These original source materials are preserved in a variety of formats, including paper, photographs, films, videotapes, and sound recordings.

Archivists developed this electronic pathfinder as one method of helping students get started with research projects. The topics selected are perennial favorites among undergraduates. Identifying archival materials is different than locating information via MarqCat, a database, or the World Wide Web.  The hypertext links on these pathfinder pages point to descriptive inventories prepared by archives staff.  The inventories usually provide patrons with folder-level descriptions of both university records and manuscripts. A list of these inventories is available online.

Several published sources contain information about many of these topics, including The Hilltop (1916-1997), The Marquette Tribune (1915-ongoing) and The Story of Marquette University, by Raphael N. Hamilton, S.J. (1953).

No list of suggested research topics could ever be complete.  Please contact a member of the archives staff if you are interested in another topic.  They'll be glad to help you get started.
