December 20, 1942. From John to Priscilla (South Pacific).

John describes war events of both local significance--such as the disappearance of Lieutenant Carl Zeidler (former Milwaukee mayor) in the south Atlantic--and global importance.  The latter include British General Bernard Montgomery's movements in North Africa, the "Darlan Deal," and naval battles in the South Pacific. (Alumni Papers, John L. Holloway Papers, 1922-1946).

Dearest:

Day before yesterday I received your letter written and postmarked on Dec. 5.  That made 13 days in transit.  Fast wasn't it.  And yesterday I got a letter from dad written Oct. 29.  Quite slow.  But any news is most welcome here.

Our daily news bulletin said yesterday that Carl Ziedler is missing somewhere at sea.  I believe it said the Pacific.  I thought he was on duty in the Atlantic.  Wouldn't it be a great feather

in his political cap if were [sic] to turn up again after having spent two weeks or so in a lifeboat or on a raft.  I think he would be made and could have any office Wisconsin has to offer.

Today is Sunday again, and I'm going to Communion.   This will make my third Sunday in a row.  Quite a spiritual rejuvenation eh?

Apparently we are going to have a midnight mass here because those boys who have been blessed with passable singing

voices have been practicing over a week on hymns and the Benedictas.  That will be an experience won't it.

Your mother really hit the jackpot didn't she with her $50.00.  Believe me, my mouth watered at your mention of Scotch and soda.  I hope you drank an additional [?] one for me.

I certainly wish I was able to take in the winter operas and plays with you.  Which reminds me, in our library here we have a copy of Shaw's Pygmalion.  You remember we saw

Ruth Chatterton as Eliza, the street gamine who was metamorphosed into a sophisticate, a couple of years ago.  I'm going to re-read that just for old times sake and remembrances.  We have also, by the way, the five great tragedies and the five great comedies of the bard of Avon.  I'll tackle those too later.  At present I'm reading S. Lewis' "Dad's Worth."  I like it very much.

It strikes me that maybe I'm way behind times because I never get around to

"best sellers" until years after they have lost their magic appeal.  Only exception I can think of to this is "Gone with the Wind."

The news from North Africa looks particularly bright today with the report that Montgomery has cut Rommel's fleeing Afrika Corps in twain.  This will certainly prove a major disaster to the "Fox" won't it?  I think there is a great deal of substance to FDR's recent statement that the Axis had lost the initiative in this

global war.  Certainly the Japs seem to be taking a shellacking in New Guinea (not to mention the Solomons and New Georgia island).  And Italy is taking a merciless pounding from the air.  Don't you think too, that those portions of the French fleet in Dakar and Alexandria will be of inestimable help to us now that Darlan has come over to our side?  I do.

This seems to be my stint for the day, darling.  You are, as always, first in my heart and affections.

John.

Hurrah for the stadium Boots!
