Descriptive Inventories:
Archivists create descriptive inventories, or finding aids, to provide access to manuscript collections
and university records. You may browse these online folder-level guides,
which are currently available
for one-half of the 150 manuscript collections and the
majority of university records. Scope & Content Notes are often prepared as part of the
finding aid, providing historical background, biographical material, and information about the
arrangement of a collection. Patrons should consult with an archivist about access to
unprocessed collections.

MARQCAT:
Processed manuscripts, faculty papers, and all rare books are cataloged in MARQCAT, the
Raynor Memorial Libraries electronic catalog. Archivists suggest beginning a MARQCAT
search within the author field, even if you are looking for the records of a membership organization,
since the creator of the records is considered the author, not the title or the subject. MARQCAT
records describing archival collections utilize Library of Congress subject headings and also contain
links to the descriptive inventories.

Records and Faculty Papers: An online index of inventories for 2,000 cubic feet of
records maintained by the University Archives. Many patrons find this index the easiest
method for locating university records.

Key Word Search
Function: This function will search single words within web pages created by the Raynor
Memorial Libraries, including descriptive inventories. It is
particularly useful if you are searching for a unique surname or term.
This function does not search MARQCAT.

Digital
Collections: To highlight and improve access to our
collections, archivists have digitized a small percentage of
photographic and printed material preserved in the Department of Special
Collections and Archives.
