The collection of the Marquette University Libraries contains over 260,000 volumes of books, bound periodicals, and electronic media in the life, health, physical, and technological sciences in addition to more than 900,000 volumes in the social sciences and humanities.

Collection Strengths

Raynor Library has approximately 1,200 current serial subscriptions in the life and health sciences, including many of the most highly cited journals in these disciplines.  The life sciences book collection includes over 54,000 volumes, encompassing all areas of cellular and molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, botany, and zoology.  There are an additional 58,000 volumes in the health sciences collection.  Primary emphases of the collections are genetics, molecular biology and neurosciences.

Electronic Resources

Electronic titles are rapidly being added, with more than 1300 journals in the life and health sciences and more than 500 biology e-books.  Access to MARQCAT, the Marquette University Libraries catalog, as well as to other library catalogs is available via the Library's homepage.  An extensive collection of Internet sites arranged by subject is also available from the Libraries' website.  Computers for browsing the Internet are available in the Libraries, and any computer connected to the campus network also has access to these resources.  Convenient remote access is available to Marquette users.

Major Article Databases

PubMed
Includes MEDLINE, OLDMEDLINE, in-process citations and out-of-scope records; consists of bibliographic citations and abstracts from more than 4,800 international journals.  It is the literature component of Entrez, which includes several molecular biology databases, such as DNA and protein sequences, genome mapping data and 3-D protein structure.  Freely available on the web to all.

MEDLINE via OVID
Index to over 4,800 international journals in health, human biology, biochemistry and bioengineering; updated monthly.  The OVID interface allows the user to control how searches are run and does the best job in using the thesaurus. Available on the campus network, via the Libraries' website, as well as off-campus to valid MU users.

BIOSIS Previews
Index to more than 5,500 international journals in the biological sciences and biomedicine; updated weekly.  Available through librarian-mediated search service offered free of charge to Marquette faculty and students.

Dissertations and Theses (formerly Dissertation Abstracts)
Contains more than 2 million listings for doctoral dissertations and master's theses.  Includes extensive coverage of North American graduate schools, with coverage of some European universities beginning in 1989.

Current Research @ Marquette University
Searchable database of Marquette University dissertations and theses. Download the full text (in pdf format) of those published after 1996 at no charge.

Other Useful Databases

Web of Science
A multidisciplinary index to the literature of science and technology, with the unique feature of searching for articles which cite a given article or author.

  • Includes Journal Citation Reports (JCR)
    Contains statistical data as a means to determine the relative importance of journals within their subject categories, including highest impact journals, most frequently used journals, and largest journals.  Covers about 5,000 leading international science journals from the ISI database.
