The collection of the Marquette University Libraries contains over 260,000 volumes of
books, bound periodicals, and electronic media in the life, health, physical, and technological sciences
in addition to more than 900,000 volumes in the social sciences and humanities.
Collection Strengths
Materials are collected to support teaching and research in all areas of chemistry--particularly
in analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry--from undergraduate level through
doctorate. English is the primary language, with material in other languages acquired
selectively. Journal publications are of primary importance; also collected are monographs and
monographic series, proceedings of symposia, academies and societies.
The chemistry collection includes almost 30,000 volumes of books, monographs, and serials, with
another 26,000 volumes cross-disciplinary with physics.
Electronic Resources
We currently have access to more than 300 electronic chemistry journals. Access to MARQCAT, the Marquette University Libraries catalog, as well
as to other library catalogs is available via the Library's homepage. An extensive collection
of Internet sites arranged by
subject is also available from the Libraries' website. Computers for browsing the Internet
are available in the Libraries, and any computer connected to the campus network also has access to
these resources. Convenient off-campus
access is available to Marquette users.
Selected Databases
SciFinder Scholar
The electronic version of CHEMICAL ABSTRACTS, updated daily, is the database CAplus. CAplus
is one of the chemical databases on the SciFinder Scholar system. The SciFinder Scholar system
is available to currently enrolled Marquette students and faculty for retrieving references to chemical
literature.
Dissertations and
Theses (formerly Dissertation Abstracts)
Contains more than 2 million listings for doctoral dissertations and master's theses. Includes
extensive coverage of North American graduate schools, with coverage of some European universities
beginning in 1989.
Current Research
@ Marquette University
Searchable database of Marquette University dissertations and theses. Download the full text
(in pdf format) of those published after 1996 at no charge.
PubChem
PubChem provides information on the biological activities of small molecules. It includes
substance information, compound structures, and bioactivity data via the three primary databases:
PubChem BioAssay, PubChem Compound, and PubChem Substance. Freely available on the web to
all.
PubMed
Includes MEDLINE, OLDMEDLINE, in-process citations and out-of-scope records; consists of
bibliographic citations and abstracts from more than 4,800 international journals. It is the
literature component of Entrez, which includes several molecular biology databases, such as DNA and
protein sequences, genome mapping data and 3-D protein structure. Freely available on the
web to all.
TOXNET: Toxicology Data Network
TOXNET is a cluster of databases covering toxicology, hazardous chemicals, environmental health
and related areas. Freely available on the web to all.
Web of Science
A multidisciplinary index to the literature of science and technology, with the unique feature of
searching for articles which cite a given article or author.
- Includes Journal
Citation Reports (JCR)
Contains statistical data as a means to determine the relative importance of journals within their
subject categories, including highest impact journals, most frequently used journals, and largest
journals. Covers more than 5,000 leading international science journals from the ISI
database.
Selected Handbooks
Beilstein Handbuch der Organischen Chemie (Beilstein Handbook of Organic Chemistry)
Located on Raynor 5th floor; call #: QD251 .B4 1918, Supplement 5, volume 7 parts 1-7
Indexes in German the literature in organic chemistry. The Raynor Memorial Libraries have
the volumes up to 1979. The Beilstein database covers the period after that.
Available through librarian-mediated search service offered free of charge to Marquette faculty and
current students.
CRC Handbook of Chemistry and
Physics
Includes basic constants, units, and conversion factors; symbols, terminology, and nomenclature;
physical constants of organic compounds; properties of the elements and inorganic compounds;
thermochemistry, electrochemistry, and kinetics; fluid properties; biochemistry; analytical chemistry;
molecular structure and spectroscopy; atomic, molecular, and optical physics; nuclear and particle
physics; properties of solids; polymer properties; geophysics, astronomy, and acoustics; practical
laboratory data; health and safety information; mathematical tables.
Gmelin Handbuch der Anorganischen Chemie (Gmelin Handbook of Inorganic
Chemistry)
Located on Raynor 5th floor; call #L: QD151 .G52
Indexes in German, later in English, the literature in inorganic chemistry. We have 477
volumes, including supplements, covering from Ac through Zr. The Gmelin database
is a structure and factual database covering literature on inorganic and organometallic
chemistry. Substance records contain the critically reviewed and evaluated data from the
GMELIN HANDBOOK OF INORGANIC CHEMISTRY AND ORGANOMETALLIC CHEMISTRY, issued in
1975 and before, covering the chemical literature for the period 1817-1970. Also included are
selected data from a pool of the 112 most important journals of inorganic, physical, and organometallic
chemistry, and other journals of physics from 1971 to the present. Available through
librarian-mediated search service offered free of charge to Marquette faculty and current students.
International Critical
Tables of Numerical Data, Physics, Chemistry and Technology
Includes an enormous amount of critical data on inorganic and organic compounds, and pure
substances; features physical, thermodynamic, mechanical, and other key properties.
