The resources supporting communication disciplines are located principally in the Memorial
Library, which contains over 1 million volumes of books, bound journals, and microforms relating to
the Humanities and Social Sciences and Sciences. Students focusing on regulatory and legal
issues will draw on the collections available to them at Marquettes Law Library.
Collection Strengths
Quantifying the multi- and interdisciplinary collections in communication is difficult due to
overlap with so many other fields, notably business, marketing, urban affairs and political science,
womens studies, history, ethics, and psychology. English is the primary language
for acquisitions of both journal and monographic literature and emphasis is on current trends and
practice rather than historical treatments.
To support the Colleges mission in its areas of graduate study, the Librarys
collection building gives special attention to the following:
Advertising: Creativity, planning, and management of advertising campaigns; social
and ethical issues; research methods.
Broadcast & Electronic Communication: Commercial radio and television,
instructional public broadcasting, corporate media, cable communication and associated industries,
and telecommunication and public policy
Communication Studies: Theories and research methods; rhetoric; organizational,
intercultural and interpersonal communication; history and law of media and communication;
media and the information society.
Film Studies: Books and journals relating primarily to 20th century
American film and popular culture.
Journalism: Newspaper, magazine and photojournalism; religious mass media;
legal and ethical aspects of journalism; urban journalism and public affairs; journalism education.
Mass Communication: Interdisciplinary foundation, theory and research methods.
Public Relations: principles and media for public relations communication; issues and
account management.
Theatre Arts: Dramaturgical research; pedagogical background for the teaching of
secondary school drama; playwriting; history; dramatic theory and criticism.; theatre management.
Research resources
Access to library materials is via the online catalog, MARQCAT,
covering all campus libraries with access 24-hours daily. Marquette participates in the Federal
Depository program, acquiring a wide variety of state and federal documents which assist particularly
business, marketing and demographic research; statistical studies, monitoring legislative and
regulatory issues, and public affairs. The Library maintains current subscriptions to a strong
collection of research and trade journals, annual reviews, and yearbooks in the communication
disciplines. Journals cover theory and research, including both qualitative and quantitative mass
communication research. To facilitate access to the research literature, the libraries subscribe to a
number of electronic periodical indexes.
The libraries are committed to providing information via current technology. PCs are
available for accessing the World Wide Web and key Web-based information is collected at
subject-related pages in the Librarys Home Page. Articles, Databases, and Other E-resources
section provides full listing of available electronic databases within subject categories. Significant
