The collection of the Marquette University Libraries contains over 260,000 volumes of books,
bound periodicals, and electronic media in the physical, technological, life and health sciences in
addition to more than 900,000 volumes in the social sciences and humanities.
Collection Strengths
The Libraries collect all current, English-language print materials relating to dentistry as practiced
in the United States. Over 10,000 volumes are held in areas such as endodontics, orthodontics,
pedodontics, periodontics, dental materials, and fixed and removable prosthetics. The collection
is supported by over 54,000 volumes in the life sciences, and over 58,000 volumes in the health
sciences. Raynor Library has more than 1,200 current serial subscriptions in the life and health
sciences; over 100 of these are dental journals.
Electronic Resources
Electronic titles are rapidly being added, with more than 1300 e-journals in the life and health
sciences. Currently the full text of 60+ dental journals are available online. The collection
also includes more than 230 e-books in the health sciences. Access to MARQCAT, the Marquette University Libraries catalog, as well
as to other library catalogs, is
available via the Libraries' homepage. A collection of librarian-selected Internet sites arranged by subject
is also available. More than 250 computers loaded with Microsoft Office and image and web
editing software are available in the Libraries. Any computer connected to
the campus network has
access to the Libraries' databases and e-journals, and convenient off-campus access is available
to Marquette users.
Major Article Databases
MEDLINE
Provides indexing to over 4,800 journals covering all aspects of biomedicine, including dentistry,
nursing, allied health, and the biological and physical sciences. Coverage is from 1966 to the
present and is international in scope. The OVID interface allows the user to control how searches are
run and does the best job in using the thesaurus. Available on the campus network, via the
Libraries' website, as well as off-campus to valid MU users.
PubMed
Includes MEDLINE, OLDMEDLINE, in-process citations and out-of-scope records; consists of
bibliographic citations and abstracts from more than 4,800 international journals. Freely
available on the Web to all.
Evidence Based Medicine Reviews
Includes the Cochrane Database of Systematic
Reviews, Database of Abstracts of Reviews
of Effects and the Cochrane Central Register
of Controlled Trials--all of which have dental content.
UpToDate
Includes drug information from Lexi-Comp. Not available
off-campus.
Other Useful Databases
Alt-HealthWatch
Includes full-text articles on alternative approaches to health care from 180 scholarly, professional
and consumer health sources. Coverage begins with 1990.
Dissertations and Theses
Contains more than 1.5 million listings for doctoral dissertations and master's theses. Includes
extensive coverage of North American graduate schools, with coverage of some European
universities beginning in 1989.
Compendex (Engineering Index)
Indexes over 2,600 international journals, conference proceedings, technical reports and
monographs in all areas of engineering as well as related fields in science and management.
Useful source for literature on dental materials and equipment.
Health And Psychosocial Instruments -
HAPI Provides descriptions and source information for more than 12,000 tests,
questionnaires, rating scales, etc. used to assess health and behavior.
INSPEC
Indexes over 4,000 international journals and conference proceedings in physics, electronics,
electrical engineering, computers and control, and information technology. Useful source
for literature on dental materials and equipment.
MDConsult
Provides access to the full-text of a number of standard health sciences publications including
40 medical reference books, more than 50 clinical journals, over 1000 peer-reviewed clinical practice
guidelines and Mosby's GenRx, with information on over 30,000 medications.
PsycINFO
Provides access to the professional and academic literature in psychology and related disciplines.
Over 1300 journals are indexed as are English-language books and book chapters.
Coverage is international in scope and includes the years 1967 to the present.
Web of Science
A multidisciplinary index to the literature of science and technology, with the unique feature of
searching for articles which cite a given article or author.

Contains statistical data as a means to determine the relative importance of journals within
their subject categories, including highest impact journals, most frequently used journals,
and largest journals. Covers about 5,000 leading international science journals from
the ISI database.
