The mathematics collection, located in Memorial Library, contains over 250,000 volumes relating to the physical, technological, and health sciences.

Collection Strengths

Materials are collected to support teaching and research in all areas of mathematics, particularly in algebra, artificial intelligence, biomathematics, calculus, computer science, differential equations, geometry, group theory, mathematical analysis, number theory, operating systems, software development, statistics, stochastic processes, time series analysis, and topology.  The collection supports programs from undergraduate level through doctorate.  The primary language of acquisition is English with material in other languages acquired selectively.  Journal publications are of primary importance; also collected are monographs and monographic series, proceedings of symposia, academies and societies.

The mathematics collection includes almost 40,000 volumes of books, monographs, and serials.  Twenty percent (20%) of the books in the collection were published in the last five years.

At present about 250 mathematics and computer science journals are available electronically.

Research Sources

To facilitate the course work and research needs of students and faculty in mathematics, computer science and statistics, the Libraries maintain a broad collection of reference and research tools in print and electronic format.

DISSERTATION ABSTRACTS

The Marquette University libraries have volumes 12-52 (1952-1992).

The database DISSERTATION ABSTRACTS is accessible online from the Raynor Memorial Libraries’ Web site either through MARQCAT, the Libraries’ online catalog, or through Journal Articles, Databases, and Other E-resources; select "General" as a discipline and click on Display Results.  It contains references to dissertations from 1861 to the present; the dissertations from 1980 forward also include the abstract.  Master theses have been included since 1962 with abstracts from 1988 forward.  Available off-campus to valid Marquette ID holders only.

MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS

The complete run of MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS (MR) from 1940 to the present is available in Memorial Library.

MATHSCINET (MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS via the web)

Available from Raynor Memorial Libraries' Web site.  MATHSCINET provides access to MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS and CURRENT MATHEMATICAL PUBLICATIONS from 1940 to the present.  Bibliographic data is available from 1940-1979; bibliographic data and review texts are available from 1980 to the present.  Available off-campus to valid Marquette Card holders only.

ZENTRALBLATT FUR MATHEMATIK UND IHRE GRENZGEBIETE (also known as MATHEMATICS ABSTRACTS)

Memorial Library has volumes 1-643 (1931-1988) with volumes 63 and 68 missing.  Mediated computerized online searching is available for the database MATH (MATHematics Abstracts) which is the online version of ZENTRALBLATT FUR MATHEMATIK UND IHRE GRENZGEBIETE).  The online search is at no charge to faculty and currently enrolled students at Marquette University.

Web of Science
Combines Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, and Arts and Humanities Citation Index in one source.  Indexes can be searched individually or combined.  The unique feature of Web of Science is to discover who cited a given author or a published work.

Journal Citation Reports (JCR)
A unique multidisciplinary resource which presents quantifiable statistical data that provides a systematic way to determine the relative importance of journals within their subject categories, including the highest impact journals, most frequently used journals, and the largest journals.
