Accessing Library E-Resources
From Home

IM a Librarian

Attention all telecommuters!  Library e-resources are available via cable modems, dial-up, and DSL. The information below refers to e-resources such as indexing and abstracting databases, full-text resources, and e-books. It does not apply to electronic class reserve materials.

In order to access library e-resources from off campus

  • You must have a current MUID.
  • Your 14-digit barcode number must be entered into the Libraries patron database.
  • You will need an active account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
  • You must have a current full version of browser software (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, Opera, etc.).  Database vendors take advantage of capabilities found in new browser versions.  Older browser versions may limit your ability to utilize searching features offered by some vendors. Since there are browser compatibility issues with some database vendors it is also advisable to have more than one browser installed on your computer.  If one browser is presenting problems switch to the other installed browser. This will help determine if the problem is vendor related or browser related.

There are two methods for accessing Library e-resources:
  1. Connect to your ISP.  Open a browser window and go to the Raynor Memorial Libraries home page http://www.marquette.edu/library/

  2. Connect to your ISP.  Activate the Virtual Private Network client software provided by Information Technology Services (ITS).  Open a browser window and go to the Raynor Memorial Libraries home page http://www.marquette.edu/library/

Using the first method you will be asked to enter your name and 14-digit barcode number when beginning a search session.  The screen will look like the example below.

If you are a current student/faculty member and cannot access databases via your barcode number, please contact the Raynor Library Circulation desk at (414) 288 -7555

VPN

The VPN client can be downloaded free of charge to current students, faculty, administrators and staff.  Information regarding downloading, installation, and using the VPN can be found on the ITS web site at: http://www.marquette.edu/pages/home/its/help/network/vpn

Questions regarding the VPN should be directed to the ITS Help Desk at: 288-7799 or via e-mail

Databases requiring the VPN client for off-campus access are listed below:

CCH Internet Tax Research Network

AOL users: The integrated browser software provided by AOL is not sufficient to access the databases from many vendors.  You must download a full browser version direct from a vendor, e.g., Microsoft, Foxfire, Netscape, or Opera, in order to effectively access e-resources.  Links for downloading browser and other useful software can be found on the following page:  http://www.marquette.edu/library/electronic/downloads.html
