Minutes of the Meeting of January 21, 2004

N. Burckel; M. Frenn, Chair; M. Gillespie; J. Hossenlopp; J. Kirk, recording; J. Krugler; D. Neumann; M. Pate; M. Seitz; W. Thorn

  1. The Chair, Dr. Marilyn Frenn, called the meeting to order in the Dean’s Conference Room in Raynor Library at 4:00pm.

  2. New members were welcomed and asked to introduce themselves.

  3. The minutes of the last meeting were approved as distributed.

  4. New Business

    1. New Access Policy and Procedures for Raynor Memorial Libraries

Burckel distributed the draft Access Policy for the Libraries.  Access Services Staff is developing procedures to effectively promulgate the policy.  Kirk has assumed responsibilities as Acting Coordinator of Access Services in the absence of Tom Holberg who was injured in January.  Members of the Marquette academic community including alumni will be admitted as in the past.  During the first part of January about 60 visitors a week were denied access.  140 visitors were allowed access with nearly two thirds of these being sponsored by members of the Marquette community.  Most others who gained entrance wanted to visit the Archives or the Funding Information Center.  15 visitors who were provided access for the day for research were charged $5 each.  The policy and the procedures will be reviewed when the semester is over.

    2. Memorial Library Renovation Schedule, especially for bound journal access

This topic was postponed, since the meeting was nearing its end.

    3. Brief Tour of Compact Shelving Area

The Libraries planned for the installation of sufficient compact shelving in Memorial Library to hold most of the bound journals in all disciplines.  Most of the journals that will not be housed in Memorial will be provided online in full text format.  Burckel led the Board on a brief tour of the new compact shelving area on the Ground Floor of Memorial Library during which they saw one half of the total compact shelving to be installed.  The remaining compact shelving will be installed later in the spring.
