MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES
UNIVERSITY LIBRARY BOARD
Minutes of the Meeting of February 5, 2002
Present: C. Andrews; N. Burckel; M. Fahey; M. Frenn; M. Havice; J. Kirk, recording; J.
Krugler; W. Kos, Chair; S. Munroe; J. O’Keeffe; P. Schanck; J. Simms.
- The Chair, Dr. William Kos, called the meeting to order in Memorial Library Room 107 at
4:00pm.
- Julie O’Keeffe, Coordinator of Instruction for the Libraries, briefed the group on the
results of the survey of faculty that was conducted this past semester. 293 faculty were
surveyed with 148 or 51% responding. Most faculty are aware of the Libraries’ electronic
services, although many services are rarely used. Assistant professors use the Libraries’
electronic services and resources most often while full professors use them least often.
Physical sciences faculty use electronic services and resources less frequently than other
discipline oriented groups. A more complete summary is available at
http://www.marquette.edu/library/information/news/2002/facultysurvey.html or from the
Deans Office.
- Julie O’Keeffe also briefed the Board about another major user survey that will be run
this semester called LibQual. 171 academic libraries will be surveyed, providing a
significant amount of data for comparison. The survey consists of 25 questions with three
responses needed for each question. Within the larger group is the Universities Library
Group of 25 academic libraries that are comparable to Marquette. Comparison with the results
of this group is anticipated to be very valuable for planning purposes.
Jay Kirk outlined the parameters of a cancellation project that will be instituted
this semester. Elsevier is a journal publisher known for high and escalating subscription
prices. The Libraries subscribe to about 210 Elsevier journals that account for
approximately 20% of the Libraries’ serials budget, but, represent less than 4% of the total
print serials received. The Libraries need to reallocate funds to accommodate annual
increases in journal costs, to continue to add new journals, and to add useful electronic
databases.
Several faculty members have suggested the addition of the Web of Science. This
expensive citation index contains indexing for the sciences, social sciences and humanities
through the Science Citation Index, the Social Science Citation Index, and
the Arts and Humanities Citation Index. A benefit of the cancellation of a
substantial number of journals could be a subscription to the Web of Science.
Understandably, some faculty may be reluctant to lose on-site access to some of these
journals. The Libraries are addressing this concern by implementing document delivery
services, which enable the retrieval of 90% of requested articles in one or two workdays. In
some circumstances, articles may be retrieved in hours.
- The next meeting tentatively scheduled for May 6 will be rescheduled for later in that
week.
