MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES
UNIVERSITY LIBRARY BOARD
Minutes of the Meeting of May 14, 2001
Present: S. Beall, N. Burckel; M. Havice; J. Kirk; W. Kos, Chair; M. Pate,
A. Sandy W. Zemler-Cizewski
- The Chair, Dr. William Kos, called the meeting to order in Memorial Library’s Instruction Room
107 at noon.
- Burckel suggested a change in the Board selection procedures that would allow faculty, other
than library representatives, to be members of the University Library Board. This hearkens back
more than a decade when this was the case. The current choice of faculty library representatives
was based on the demonstrated interest in Libraries’ issues. With the planned construction of
Raynor and the migration from print to electronic resources, Burckel suggested that it would be
useful for the Board to have a larger group from which to select members. The Board discussed
and approved this suggestion. Dr. Kos will recommend the proposed change to Dr. David
Buckholdt, Vice President for Academic Affairs.
- Kirk briefly reviewed the history of journal cancellation at Marquette noting that University
Administration has continued to support the Libraries’ acquisition budget well over the past two
decades. This support has allowed the Libraries to subscribe to a large number of electronic journals
while maintaining subscriptions to print journals. Further, the Libraries continue to add both
electronic and print journals. Normally, print journals are added only, if an online version is not
available.
This year the acquisitions budget was not funded at the requested level, and that, as well as
the demand for electronic journals, has signaled the Libraries to assess the need to maintain both
print and electronic journals. For many journal titles, the Libraries pay independently for both the
print and the electronic format. To reduce this duplication and the cost that accompanies it, some
departments have been asked to review print titles for cancellation, for which an online version is
also available. The online version of all of these titles provides page image versions of each journal,
which is an exact duplicate of the printed page. It is recognized that some faculty may be
uncomfortable with this migration, and the Libraries will work to assure long-term access to digital
journals before canceling print subscriptions.
- Burckel distributed and discussed the new Five-Year Strategic Plan, which the Libraries’ staff
has just completed. The plan is guided by the following five strategic themes: Anticipating User
Needs, Sustaining Collection Excellence, Educating for the Information Age, Delivering Information
Resources, and Enhancing Excellence through Staff and Facilities. Annual objectives for the Libraries
will be derived from the Plan and the five strategic themes. An article discussing the plan will
appear in a forthcoming issue of News & Views.
- The next meeting will be scheduled in the fall.
Minutes prepared by J. Kirk.
