MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES
UNIVERSITY LIBRARY BOARD
Minutes of the Meeting of September 12, 2002
Present: C. Andrews; N. Burckel; M. Fahey; M. Frenn; J. Kirk, recording; J. Krugler; W. Kos, Chair;
C. Miller; S. Munroe; J. O’Keeffe; J. Simms.
- The Chair, Dr. William Kos, called the meeting to order in Memorial Library Room 107 at
2:30pm.
- LIB QUAL Survey
Julie O’Keeffe, Coordinator of Instruction for the Libraries, briefed the group on the results of the LIB
QUAL survey of faculty and students that was conducted during the spring semester 2002. 162
academic libraries were surveyed, providing a significant amount of data for comparison.
Within this larger group is the University Libraries Group (ULG) of 25 academic libraries that are
comparable to Marquette. Detailed comparisons with this group are anticipated to be very
valuable for planning purposes. In 23 of the 25 categories, Marquette scored above the mean
for all participating nstitutions. [The survey consisted of 25 questions with three responses
needed for each question.] Faculty members who would like more information about the LIB
QUAL survey should contact Dr. Burckel.
- Elsevier Journal Cancellations
Jay Kirk outlined the parameters of the journal cancellation project, which was undertaken during the
Spring semester. The project focused on the journals of Elsevier, a journal publisher known for
high and escalating subscription prices. Faculty and librarians were asked to nominate Elsevier
titles to consider for cancellation. The list of nominated titles was returned to faculty with a
request to contact Kirk if there were any titles which faculty believed it was important to retain.
Approximately a dozen titles were retained when faculty members spoke for them.
Approximately 70 titles were cancelled with savings of over $100,000, which will be used to renew
other journals, and add new journals and electronic databases.
- JSTOR and the binding of journals
The Libraries are charter members of JSTOR, which provides full image back-runs of significant
scholarly journals. These back-runs have a two to five year delay behind the current publication
year. Marquette, as well as a number of other libraries, is considering the possibility of not
binding the issues of journals which are part of JSTOR. Current plans include retaining the
unbound issues. It was noted that of the 152 journals in this group, 138 of them have current
online access from another source. The Board agreed that binding of these journals did not
seem necessary.
- There was a suggestion that the Libraries find a way to alert faculty members to the addition of
new journal titles just as new book titles are now noted in MARQCAT. An additional suggestion
was to find a way to alert faculty to cancelled journals as well.
- A second Board meeting is planned for later in the semester.
