Update from the Dean
- LibQUAL
Dean Simmons-Welburn distributed a one page summary of the results from LibQUAL, a
survey that was administered to the Marquette academic community during the spring semester
of 2006. Marquette and several other AJCU libraries participated in the survey with many
other libraries. Overall, the Raynor Memorial Libraries’ services, collections and building
were viewed positively.&nbps; Three radar charts comparing the responses of the users of Raynor
Memorial, AJCU and other libraries provided a visual demonstration of how positive Marquette
libraries users viewed their Libraries in contrast to that of the users of the AJCU and other
libraries.
- D2L
The Libraries’ ran a pilot project which embedded links for scholarly materials and relevant
library services into the D2L course management system for a selected group of faculty.
Forty percent of the participating faculty saw the links as very beneficial and another forty
percent saw the links as somewhat beneficial. Librarians will continue to work with faculty
on this issue.
- Reception for new faculty
The Dean will hold a reception for new faculty in Raynor Memorial Libraries’ Conference
Center on Tuesday, October 3, 2006.
- Meeting with students
Dean Simmons-Welburn has met with the officers of MUSG three times. She intends
to meet with groups of graduate students as well.
- Conversations with the Dean
Dean Simmons-Welburn plans to hold a “Conversations with the Dean” forum for students to
sit and speak with her.
- Library Acquisitions Budget Update
Kirk distributed a 2006-2007 collection budget chart displaying the resources available for
purchase of print, electronic and other materials. Over 25% of the budget was committed to
monographs, over 30% was provided for print journals and serials including monographic series,
and slightly over 44% were available for electronic resources such as journals, databases, indexes,
etc. Even though the Libraries expend nearly 75% of the collection budget on print and
online serials, journals and databases, a large number of books are still being purchased.
For example, monographic series that are purchased with serials funds are nearly all individual
books. Also, in the last year, approximately 250,000 e-books were added to the
collection. While the discussion was limited to an overview of the collection budget and its
expenditures, each department receives a three year comparison of the expenditures that were
tracked to that department.
- Project Muse Journals Review
Kirk shared a draft of a letter including a list of Project Muse Journals that are received in
print and online. The Libraries pay for these journals twice, once for each format. To
reduce purchase of duplicate subscriptions, the print journal subscription will be cancelled at the end
of the calendar year. In the letter, Kirk asks that any faculty member who has concerns
about the cancellation of the print versions of any of these journals, to contact him. The
cancellation of the print subscriptions will recoup over $7,000 for purchase of other journals or to
pay for the annual increase in journal subscriptions.
- Issues Raised by Board Members
Dr. Pinfen Yang noted that the graphics in some journals do not translate well into a pdf
prints. This can be a problem if a journal is not owned and a copy of a desired article is
received in printed form. Many if not most articles from journals which the Libraries do
not own, are received in electronic format in color, if the original was in color. This allows
the researcher to make a power point with the same resolution as the original.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:15am.
