"Tolkien,
Lewis and Hollywood: What Images Cannot Say" The Raynor Memorial Libraries' Department of Special Collections and Archives will host a lecture by Tolkien scholar Eduardo Segura, Professor of Aesthetics, Philosophy of Language, and Literature at the Institutio De Filosofia Edith Sten (Granada, Spain) at 3:00 p.m. on September 26th in the Raynor Library, 1355 W. Wisconsin Avenue, Milwaukee. |

Professor Segura's presentation, "Tolkien, Lewis, and Hollywood: What Images Cannot Say," will center on differences between literature and cinema as artistic means, particularly from J.R.R. Tolkien's and C.S. Lewis’ outlook. Dr. Segura will discuss Tolkien's passion for inventing languages, and the immense difficulty of communicating metaphorical meaning on film—even those brilliant scenes that Hollywood has recently released. A question and answer session will follow. Dr. Segura has authored three books on Tolkien's fiction including El Mago de las Palabras, Tolkien o la Fuerza del Mito, and El Viaje del Anillo, and translated numerous literary works to Spanish. Eduardo Sequra's visit to Marquette is supported by the Tolkien Archives Fund, an endowment established by the late Richard E. Blackwelder to promote and expand Marquette's extraordinary collection of Tolkien manuscripts and secondary materials. Other distinguished scholars who have presented at Marquette include Thomas Shippey (The Road to Middle-earth and J.R.R. Tolkien: Author of the Century) and Douglas A. Anderson (The Annotated Hobbit). The Tolkien Archives Fund also provided financial support for the academic conference, "The Lord of the Rings, 1954-2004" and the published conference proceedings. All students, faculty, and staff are invited to join this free lecture in the lower level of Raynor Library. A Marquette ID card is required to enter Raynor Library; members of the general public are welcome, but must pre-register by phone (414-288-5901) or e-mail matt.blessing@marquette.edu |
