Libraries Win Information Literacy Award |

February 2006The
Wisconsin Association of Academic Librarians (WAAL) has recently awarded its 2005-2006 Information
Literacy Award to Marquette's Raynor Memorial Libraries. The WAAL award recognizes a librarian or
librarian-led team that has made innovative or significant contributions to advance information
literacy. The award will be presented at WAAL's annual conference in late March.
Marquette's winning project, "The Assessment Rubric Project: Partnering with Faculty and University Administrators in Support of Student Learning," was created by Research & Outreach Service's Instruction Team: Valerie Beech, Rosemary Del Toro, Rose Trupiano, and Julie O'Keeffe, chair. In announcing the award, WAAL Information Literacy Committee chair, Jill Markgraf of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, said "What impressed the award committee so much about your project was its innovative approach to incorporating the ideals of information literacy into the curriculum throughout your campus. The rubric project responded to a demonstrated need on your campus, and your library team exhibited creativity, practicality, and ingenuity in addressing a campus mandate in this manner." An outgrowth of the assessment effort on campus, the rubrics support faculty teaching. With the support of the Provost's Office, the Libraries (research), College of Arts & Sciences (writing), and College of Communication (oral presentation) developed the tools for use in scoring and/or grading specific components of assignments. Over 1000 copies of the rubrics have been distributed to campus faculty and have been used in conjunction with assessment workshops. A point system and scoring columns for the research and presentation rubrics have been included to demonstrate use of the rubrics as a grading tool. To facilitate customization, Microsoft Word versions of the rubrics are available. Faculty are encouraged to explore how they might use or adapt the rubric examples, which are posted online. More information about information literacy in the curriculum is posted on the Libraries' Web site. Questions about the rubrics or about the Libraries' instruction effort may be addressed to Julie O'Keeffe at 288-5996. |
