Libraries Announce Chronicle Trial

October 2007—The Libraries are pleased to offer a trial of The Chronicle of Higher Education online through the month of October.  In addition to promoting use of the weekly newspaper and its special features, the Libraries hope interest in an online subscription would result in University savings through cancellations of print subscriptions.  While the list of subscribers is confidential, the publisher has identified more than 55 Marquette mail addresses among their subscribers.

The latest issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education is available every Monday morning.  The online edition also offers daily news updates, statistics, essays, grant listings, and unlimited, searchable access to the complete archives since September 1989.

During the trial, the Chronicle is available to Marquette users from any campus network location, as well as from off campus.  Nearly 700 institutions have campus-wide electronic subscriptions, including Columbia University, Georgetown University, Loyola University of Chicago, Princeton University, Wake Forest University, and Xavier University.

Features of the online Chronicle:

  • All text from the current edition, which prints and mails every Friday, is posted the following Monday morning.
  • Job postings--thousands of faculty and administrative positions--updated daily, plus other career services, such as employer profiles, career advice and counseling, and salary data.
  • Searchable archive of back issues going back to September 1989.
  • Commentary and essays from the weekly magazine, The Chronicle Review.
  • Data from the annual Almanac and other special reports are in easy-to-search databases.
  • Supplemental information to print articles and other "extras," such as slide shows and videos.
  • Free daily e-mail newsletter, "Academe Today," and RSS feeds on topics as varied as technology, hiring, and fundraising.
