Archives' Photos Featured in 125th Exhibit

January 2007--Photographs from Raynor Library's archives are featured in a new exhibit at the University's Haggerty Museum of Art, running January 25th through April 1st.  "Marquette Then & Now: Images Celebrating 125 Years of Faith and Learning in Action" celebrates Marquette's rich history by pairing historic and contemporary photographs.  The exhibit features photographs spanning 1881 to the present and documenting a wide array of people, sporting events, and the ever-changing campus.  Marquette University photographers have recreated the angles of many historic photos to create a direct comparison of then and now.

Co-sponsors and contributors include the Libraries' Special Collections and University Archives, Haggerty Museum of Art, and the Instructional Media Center.  For information on hours and parking, please visit www.marquette.edu/haggerty.  The current exhibit represents a tiny fraction of Raynor Library's archival holdings of more than 150,000 photographs.  An enlargement of any Marquette photo may be requested through Special Collections by calling 414-288-7256; see the department's duplication rates and services.  The present exhibit caps the Libraries' contributions to the University's 125th Anniversary celebration; other recent projects featuring archival holdings include the digital Hilltop, Women in Blue & Gold, and the men's basketball film-to-DVD conversion.

(left) Women of Merrity Hall, ca. 1947-48.  Following the Second World War, the Association of Marquette University Women purchased several nearby homes and converted them to student housing to accommodate the rapidly expanding enrollment.  Merrity Hall was a former apartment building that served as a women's residence hall.  Student monitors enforced a "lights out" policy at 10:30 p.m.  One of Marquette's finest neighbors, the Blood Center of Wisconsin, today occupies this location, at 17th Street and Wisconsin Ave.
