January 2007The Libraries have added the following new online subscriptions and digital texts since August 2006. Most are new acquisitions, while several represent a change of format or significant enhancement to ongoing subscriptions. All are available to Marquette users from any campus network location, as well as from off-campus. If you have questions, please drop by the Information Desk or use other AskUs! services. New Databases LLMC Digital (Law Library Microform Consortium) A full-text database that provides access to a wide variety of legal and law-related materials--federal, state, and international publications. The U.S. Statutes at Large, Official Opinions of the Attorneys General of the United States, and Decisions of the United States Department of the interior are represented. Mary Ferrell Foundation The Mary Ferrell Foundation hosts the largest electronic archive of information covering the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, subsequent investigations, and the historical context of the period. The collection includes over 10,000 entries for names and organizations relevant to researchers of the JFK assassination. Also included are documents, essays, photographs, audio and video clips. Milton: A Bibliography (1624-1799) This online version of John T. Shawcross's bibliography of Milton's works contains over 13,000 entries. The bibliography brings together references to all manuscripts and editions of Milton's works, as well as studies and criticism, allusions to and quotations of Milton during the years of coverage. Minority Data Resource Center This new initiative of the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) provides data resources for the comparative analysis of issues affecting racial and ethnic minority populations in the United States. Data includes newly acquired studies in immigration, place of origin, ancestry, ethnicity, and race. ProceedingsFirst An index of over 180,000 records providing tables of contents of papers presented at conferences worldwide since 1993. Updated bi-weekly, each record contains a list of the papers presented at each conference. Like its companion, PapersFirst, ProceedingsFirst it provides access to The British Library Document Supply Centre's vast collection of conference proceedings. PapersFirst The British Library Document Supply Centre's (BLCDSC) 6 million+ collection of records covering every congress, symposium, exposition, workshop, and meeting since October 1993. The BLCDSC is a document supplier for the OCLC Interlibrary Loan service (via ILLiad). Digital Texts Americans at War (Macmillan Reference USA/Thomson-Gale, 2005) An encyclopedia that places major American conflicts--from the Colonial Wars through the War on Terrorism--in the context of cultural and social events and conditions on the home front. Articles include biographies and topics such as civil liberties, media, politics, popular culture, religion, memory and national identity, civic celebrations and monumental art, literature, the roles of women and minorities, veterans, science and technology, humor, and music. The Chicago Manual of Style, (University of Chicago Press Online) The "bible of the publishing and research community" was first published in 1906, and is now presented online in its revised 15th edition. The complete site contents are browsable, indexed, and fully searchable. See the Libraries "spotlight" introduction. Dictionary of American History (Scribner's, 2003) The 9-volume searchable e-book set features updated and revised entries from previous editions, as well as more than 800 new entries covering recent events and topics not covered previously. Also included are maps and primary source documents related to specific periods in American history. Encyclopedia of American Foreign Policy (Scribner's, 2002) A compilation of in-depth, original, interpretive essays by distinguished scholars that may be used to supplement, and certainly to enrich, the traditional accounts available in history textbooks, or other encyclopedias. The 3-volume indexed set covers concepts and doctrines, policymaking, commerce and science, human rights and arms control, with specific articles on topics ranging from anti-imperialism to environmental diplomacy, from refugee policies to terrorism and countermeasures. Each article has a bibliography and is cross-referenced. Encyclopedia of Children and Childhood in History and Society (Macmillan Reference USA, 2004) Worldwide social and cultural history of childhood is examined, including education, parenting, child labor, economics, images of childhood, children's literature, play, toys and games, health, physiology, law, the criminal justice system, and social welfare. The Encyclopedia of Irish History and Culture (Macmillan Reference USA/Thomson/Gale, 2004) spans prehistoric times to the present, and treats both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland in detail. Entries are written by specialists in history, archaeology, anthropology, geography, politics, economics, the Irish and English languages and literatures, the visual arts, and other fields. Encyclopedia of Medicine (Thomson Gale, 2006) Information on more than 1,600 medical disorders and concepts. Each article includes in-depth discussion of causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, procedures, and other related topics. Encyclopedia of Nursing and Allied Health (Thomson Gale, 2007) The encyclopedia is written for students and professionals in the health field. The entries cover topics in body systems and functions, conditions and common diseases, issues and theories, techniques and practices, as well as devices and equipment. Encyclopedia of Russian History (Macmillan Reference USA, 2004) provides comprehensive information about the people, politics, economics, religion, culture, and social systems of Russia from the earliest beginnings of the Russian nation (among the ancient Eastern Slavic tribes) to the end of czarist Russia and on through the rise and fall of the Soviet Union. Encyclopedia of the Modern Middle East and North Africa (Macmillan Reference USA/Thomson/Gale, 2004) The recent changes in the Middle East are reflected in this updated second edition. The encyclopedia covers the modern history of the Middle East and North Africa, with major sections on Colonialism and Imperialism, the World Wars, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the United Nations' involvement in the region. Each country in the region is reviewed, detailing its population, economy, and government. Handbook of Chemistry and Physics Online This online version of the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics is a ready reference book of chemical and physical data. Since 1913, it is the premier source not only of physical properties data, but also of mathematical tables, sources of critical data, chemical nomenclature, symbols, and terminology. Historical Statistics of the United States (Cambridge University Press, 2006) This new electronic edition considerably expands and updates the previous work published in 1970. The set also provides a wealth of information downloadable in Excel or CSV format. Groups of tables can be downloaded in .zip format. Individual tables can be customized and downloaded.
Eighteenth Century Journals II provides fulltext versions of 70 British newspapers and periodicals published between 1699 and 1812 and include the writings of Sir Isaac Newton; the French Revolution; reviews of literature and fashion throughout Europe; political debates; and coffee house gossip and discussion. List of titles included in this collection. Enhancements to Existing Subscription ERIC announced a new streamlined and restructured Web site in September 2006. The list of indexed journals has been reformatted to show years of coverage and number of ERIC records for each. The site has a more powerful cross-platform search engine with faster-loading pages. Search terms are now highlighted in each returned results. New relevance-weighting standards improve the quality of the results. Three options for sorting search results are now included--author, source, and publication date. The removal of the stemming feature has been replaced with the asterisk (*) wildcard--quotes are no longer needed.
