New Digital Collection:  Service at Marquette

August 2008--Raynor Memorial Libraries has recently published a new digital collection, Service at Marquette, drawn from photographs in the University Archives.  The collection currently consists of 150 images from the late 1960s to the present – from the early days of the Marquette University Community Action Program’s (MUCAP) activities through hurricane relief efforts in New Orleans in 2006.

Originally conceived in conjunction with a consortial project supported by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) Library Deans, the collection documents Marquette’s long tradition of engagement in community service.

Fifteen different service projects are represented; the collection is strongest in documenting Habitat for Humanity, Hunger Clean-Up, the Marquette Action Program, and MUCAP.  The majority of images were made by student photographers engaged in community service projects.

Over time, this collection is expected to grow and encompass an even wider range of service projects. In general, Archives has few details about the action or participants and members of the community are invited to provide further information so descriptions can be enhanced.  Community members  are also invited to donate images from these and similar service projects to the University Archives.
