"Digging in Syria: Tell Qarqur"

Dr. Dempsey will highlight her 6-week 2006 summer trip to Syria where she served as epigrapher for an archeological dig at Tell Qarqur in northwestern Syria.  She will include a slide show presentation of photographs taken at Tell Qarqur as well as cover significant finds from past seasons of excavation.

The Tell Qarqur archeological excavations are sponsored by the Catholic Biblical Association and the American Schools of Oriental Research.

Dr. Dempsey has been a member of Marquette University's Department of Theology since 1994; she teaches graduate and undergraduate classes on the Old Testament.

She received her Ph.D. from the Department of Semitic and Egyptian Languages and Literatures at The Catholic University of America. Her specialty is Northwest Semitic languages (primarily Hebrew and Aramaic); she has also studied Classical Arabic, Akkadian, Koine Greek, and Egyptian.

Dr. Dempsey has published articles in Vetus Testamentum, Biblische Notizen, The Bulletin of the American Schools of Oriental Research, Orientalia, and The Bible Today and served for seven years as a member of the Editorial Board for the revision of the New American Bible Old Testament. She has served as the epigrapher at Tell Qarqur, Syria, and at Tell Nimrin, Jordan.

All students, faculty, and staff are invited to join the colloquium.  The event is free and open to all. A Marquette ID card is required to enter the Raynor Library; members of the general public are required to register (at least 10 minutes in advance of the program) at the library entrance with a photo ID.
