"Hip Hop Culture: Then and Now" What is hip hop culture? What are its beginnings and how has it evolved? What does "keeping it real" mean? Even though hip hop coined the phrase, is hip hop still "keeping it real?" Ebony A. Utley, 2005-06 Arnold Mitchem Dissertation Fellow Tuesday, April 4, 2006 Ebony A. Utley is currently teaching a Marquette University course, "Hip Hop Culture: Keeping it Real" (SOCI/ANTH 198). She is a Ph.D. candidate in Communication Studies at Northwestern University. Ms. Utley's dissertation, "Gods in the 'Hood: The Rhetorical Function of Rap's Figures of the Divine," considers how divine figures function in gangsta rap lyrics. Ms. Utley earned her master's degree in communication studies (2002) at Northwestern, where she was a Jacob K. Javits Fellow, and has published rhetorical studies of abolitionist and civil rights discourse. All students, faculty, and staff are invited to join the colloquium. The event is free and open to all. A Marquette ID card is required to enter the Raynor Library; members of the general public are required to register (at least 10 minutes in advance of the program) at the library entrance with a photo ID. The colloquium series is jointly sponsored by the Marquette University Librarians' Assembly and the Library Support Staff Association. Questions concerning the event may be addressed to Alberto Herrera, 288-2140 or Alberto.Herrera@marquette.edu |
