Have a Question? Ask a Librarian! The Memorial Library Reference Department introduced Ask a Librarian in fall 1996. Anyone with computer access can e-mail reference questions to librarians via the Librarys Web site. The most frequently asked questions fall into three categories 1) how to access electronic resources from off-campus; 2) general reference questions; 3) library information such as holdings, hours, and policies. Questions are usually answered within one working day. Responding to a survey, Professor Patrick McGilligan (Performing Arts) wrote, I love Ask a Librarian. I am pretty good at researching elusive questions but once in a while I am stumped or cant make it to the library. At that point, I log in with Ask a Librarian. A teaching assistant responded that she recommends the service to her English 001-002 students as a substantial time-saver. It infinitely expands the number of resources you can tap for a project. A librarians expertise is also helpful in narrowing those resources to whats useful; Ask a Librarian makes the entire research process more efficient and effective. Librarians enjoy the variety of questions and the opportunity to help students who may not have another place to turn. Anne Reuland, Head of Reference & Information Services, says Ask a Librarian statistics suggest a future trend. Most questions are sent by Marquette students during hours that in-person reference service is available. These students are choosing e-mail over phone or in-library service. As users continue to find e-mail more convenient, we expect to see this number increase. If you have a reference question, feel free to contact the Memorial Library Reference desk by phone (288-7556) or e-mail(memref@marquette.edu). |
