New to the CollectionDatabases: 22 databases were added during the last year, 19 of which are full-text sources. Supporting a wide range of disciplines, they include dictionaries and encyclopedias, data files, periodical indexes, plus full-text journal files and e-books. Many licenses were contracted jointly with other Wisconsin academic libraries, at a savings for Marquette. The Libraries now subscribe to over 100 databases, about half providing full text capabilities. Selected new databases include: American National Biography; Art Full Text; Grove Dictionary of Art Online; Index Islamicus (CD-ROM); International Index to Music Periodicals Full Text; New Testament Abstracts (CD-ROM); Oxford English Dictionary; Thesaurus Linguae Graecae (CD-ROM); United Nations Treaty Collection; W. B Yeats Collection. For a complete list of databases, visit http://www.marquette.edu/library/research/ E-Books: Electronic books pose the most questions and challenges for libraries. In spring 2000, we led a consortial effort of Wisconsin libraries to purchase e-books from netLibrary, a new e-book vendor. Over 1500 copyrighted, scholarly books may be searched, browsed and borrowed right from the users desktop. All digital books are cataloged and linked to MARQCAT. E-journals: In 1999-2000 the Libraries added 385 full-text journals with Web-based access. This is in addition to over 3000 journals available in full text via various databases and linked to MARQCAT title records. Notable among recent additions are: Annual Reviews (online access to the 27 titles produced by Annual Reviews Inc.); Project Muse added 66 titles, expanding the content to include 112 journals; JSTOR added its second archival journal collection, the General Science Collection, which includes material dating back to the 17th century. Complete listings and holdings may be viewed on the Libraries Web site under Research Sources/E-Journals. |

| The Libraries monitor use of electronic resources closely. Counting methods vary among our vendors, but it is clear that the acceptance of electronic resources is expanding. Our studies show that over 50% of all connections to licensed databases result in retrieval of full-text articles. ProQuest alone provided 387,223 full-text articles last year. Use of JSTORs online archives increased over 220% last year. Off-campus access to licensed databases also increased dramatically. | ![]() Electronic books arrive! Memorial Library has a Rocket e-Book reader (above) for demonstration. If interested, inquire at the 2nd floor desk. |
