Fall 2000 Library Newsletter

Looking Ahead...from the Dean

Each year we identify a set of objectives designed to improve or expand services and collections for users. In planning for the new Raynor Library we try to anticipate how to deliver services in that new environment. For instance, in the coming year we will take a closer look at how our collections are used, and we will explore with faculty the best format choice for new acquisitions. These measures guide our plans for meeting future needs of faculty and students. We will also expand electronic reserves and online renewals and institute a new e-mail notification system. We already regularly catalog important Internet sites and integrate them into our online catalog. This fall we’re unveiling a revised Web site that even better integrates subject access to both print and electronic information. Finally, we will extend the wireless network to the Science Library.

These are examples of changes that need not wait for our new building. In fact, experimenting with these services now gives us an opportunity to gauge user reaction and to smooth our eventual transition to the Raynor Library. Conversations with colleagues and consultants enhanced our new library planning this past spring. We found substantial agreement with the fact that traditional library, computing, and media services are converging in response to user demand for content (library), conduit (computing) and communication (media). The challenge is how to represent these needs in the new library. Our ongoing innovations and objectives are aimed at anticipating these changes.

A full report on Raynor Library planning will be made to the Board of Trustees this fall. In the meantime, to share your ideas or suggestions, please contact me at Nicholas.Burckel@marquette.edu.
