Staff Milestones

Library staff members keep their edge through involvement in a wide variety of professional activities. Here’s a mere sampling of what library folks do besides the day-to-day running of a major research facility and collection.

President Clinton appointed Nick Burckel to a second 4-year term on the National Historical Publications and Records Commission; he was also appointed to the Editorial Board of a new journal, Portal: Libraries and the Academy. Bruce Cole and Dennis Higgins participated in the WAMI (Wisconsin Area Music Industry) Awards show and took home the Library’s special WAMI Award. Bill Gagliani published book reviews in BookLovers, BookPage, Cemetery Dance, and The Chiaroscuro and short stories in The Grimoire and More Monsters from Memphis. John Jentz published an article in the journal Studies in American Political Development and was awarded a grant from Marquette’s Mellon endowment to plan an information literacy component for the Logic core course. Jim Lowrey presented at the annual Wisconsin Association of Academic Librarians (WAAL) conference. Julie O’Keeffe co-chaired the WAAL conference. Phil Runkel spoke on the Catholic Worker archives at the European Catholic Worker gathering in Hamburg. Susan Sponberg was elected to the Board of Directors of the American Theological Library Association. Susan Stawicki-Vrobel presented papers at the NMU Sports and Society Conference and the Ohio Academy of History. Rose Trupiano presented a paper at the Wisconsin Library Association Annual Conference, and a workshop to the Waukesha County Federated Library System. Jean Zanoni was elected Chair of the Wisconsin Library Association, Technical Services Division, and spoke at the WAAL conference.
