HILLTOP GOES ONLINE

The Hilltop is the Libraries' newest digital collection, prepared to commemorate Marquette's 125th anniversary. This major project involved scanning 82 volumes--30,000 pages--of the student annual, which began publication in 1915 and was discontinued in 1999. The yearbooks and their photographs document not only the evolution of the University, but also the surrounding community. The yearbooks are mounted with search and browse capabilities, as well as three special features: “Art of the Hilltop,” a collection of color plates; footage (streaming video) of the 1930 distribution of the Hilltop; and a 10-minute recording (streaming audio) from the 1970 yearbook. Also, in honor of the 125th, Special Collections has mounted an online photo exhibit on “Johnston Hall: 100 Years in the Making.” In October, the newest digital collection will debut: “Women in Blue and Gold”—the rich history of women's athletics at Marquette, 1975-2005.

MORE MARQCAT ENHANCEMENTS

A recent addition to individual MARQCAT records, labeled “Permanent link to this record” allows users to bookmark or save hyperlinks for individual books or other items.

Coming soon: Find It @MU. The Libraries are in the process of installing software that will allow users of various research databases to easily link to digital editions of journal articles to which we subscribe, particularly those from vendors other than the database publisher. This is a significant advancement in the integration of our digital resources.

FROM THE DEAN: REFLECTIONS ON 125 YEARS

The start of the fall semester signals an end to the relaxed schedules, research projects, and travel we associate with those “lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer.” Classrooms are filling with students returning to the life of the mind with exposure to new ideas and opportunities to become engaged in learning. As we embark upon our celebration of 125 years of learning at Marquette, I invite you to envision the earliest library and its staff at the university. As the library's newest dean, finding out more about Marquette's first library caught my interest in the historical context of our services and collections. More…

SEARCHPATH

The Libraries are now offering Searchpath, a self-paced tutorial that helps students learn to find and critically evaluate information. The 6 modules include: starting smart, choosing a topic, using MARQCAT, finding articles, using the Web, and citing sources. Searchpath is available 24/7 and is part of the Libraries' goal to increase students' self-sufficiency. For questions about Searchpath, or faculty who are interested in adopting Searchpath for a class, please call Julie O'Keeffe, coordinator of outreach services. More…

NEW MUGS

Bring your travel mug to the Brew @ the Bridge! With the start of fall semester, coffee will be dispensed only in hard-sided, spill-proof mugs in an effort to combat spills and stains throughout the buildings. Thanks to the AMU and Brew management, new mugs are available for $2 or coffee-drinkers may purchase coffee in their own covered, hard-sided mugs.

LIBRARY SURVEY RESULTS COMING SOON

Thanks to the responses of 749 students and faculty, the Libraries are still analyzing the mountain of data received in the spring survey. Using a rigorously tested instrument, called LibQUAL+, is allowing comparison of the results not only with Marquette 's previous participation in 2002, but also with more than 200 libraries nationwide and with 21 other Association of Jesuit Colleges and University libraries. The survey's results focus on access to information; affect of service (whether we're “caring” and “responsive”); and library as place. In addition to the scores on 35 items, respondents were allowed to add commentary on anything they wished, which netted comments and suggestions from 249 respondents. Stay tuned for details on the responses. See more about the survey
