2008-09 Interns—Marquette
established an internship program ten years ago to provide professional work experience and mentoring
for UW-Milwaukee students in the graduate School of Information Studies. This academic year's
interns and their assignments are:
Jody Hoks' (Archives and Special Collections) tasks include working on "In the
Spotlight," a monthly showcase of various archival materials, which includes research and
digitization of materials. She has a B.A. in English Literature from Metropolitan State University
in Minnesota and is currently working on a dual Masters in Library and Information Science and
Literature.
Stephanie Lewin (Outreach) helps to produce library newsletters and announcements, as well
as other releases pertaining to library events. She has a B.A. in Music from UW-Milwaukee and is
halfway through her dual Masters degree in Library Information Science and Music History.
Carolyn Weber (Research & Instructional Services) answers questions at the Information
Desk and helps with instruction, as well as taking on special projects. She has a B.A. from
UW-Milwaukee in English and is in her second year of a dual Masters degree in Library and
Information Science and Women's Studies.
Sarah Westphal (Bibliographic Control) helps with copy cataloging and database management
and has a B.S. in Food Science from UW-Madison. She is in her second year of graduate study in the
School of Information Studies.
Secret Chefs Produce Cookbook
Since 2001 an informal group of staff, known as the Secret Chefs, has been preparing and serving
all-staff soup luncheons to benefit designated local charities. More than $8,000 has been raised
over the years for Casa Maria, Milwaukee Rescue Mission, MU Habitat for Humanity International, and
Repairers of the Breach. Finally bowing to requests for recipes, the Secret Chefs issued a s
piral-bound cookbook, Stir the Pot, with more than a hundred favorite recipes for
soup. stew, and other main dish favorites. In their tradition of fundraising, the group is turning
over 100% of the profits for the cookbook to Casa Maria in honor of the 75th anniversary of the
Catholic Worker movement. More...
Interlibrary Loan Student Assistant Wins @ "Jeopardy"--
Interlibrary Loan student assistant and senior Danielle Zsenak's dream came true! She was selected
to complete in the "Jeopardy" College Championship. Although the competition was held in
late April, she was sworn to secrecy until the show aired in May. All the positive thinking of her
library colleagues must have helped because she ended up finishing in second place. Interlibrary
loan staff miss their 3-year student assistant this year, but are seeking a replacement who can
fill her shoes, if not game show glory. More...
