Audiovisual materials are among the Libraries' hottest circulating items. The collection now includes over 10,000 films in VHS or DVD format, some of which were checked out more than 25-30 times last year. To increase access for the many users, a new 5-day loan policy went into effect with the start of the Spring '07 semester. All movies are listed in MARQCAT and may be checked out at the Raynor lower level Reserves/AV desk, which will also answer any questions about the loan policy.

NEW READ POSTER

The Libraries recently produced a new READ poster, which features Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade and his former Marquette English professor, Dr. Paula Gillespie. Gillespie is also director of the Ott Memorial Writing Center, located in Raynor Library. Wade has been active in the NBA's literacy program for kids and for the poster he picked Pride and Prejudice, which he read in Gillespie's class.

2006 SURVEY RESULTS

Library administrators have been analyzing results of last spring's (April 2006) survey and results have been released. Almost 700 students and faculty responded to the online survey, which used a rigorously-tested instrument called LibQUAL+. Since Marquette's survey was administered at the same time as more than 200 libraries nationally and 21 other Jesuit institutions' libraries, the results yielded interesting comparisons. The Marquette community indicated their highest needs or expectations lie in the strength and accessibility of the collection. A question on frequency of use revealed that 30% of undergrads use the library on-site daily and almost 60% of faculty respondents use the electronic library resources daily. In addition to answering the standard questions, 248 respondents offered helpful written comments. A summary, as well as the complete results, are online. More…

INNOVATIVE FUNDRAISER LED BY STAFF

Food, conviviality, and philanthropy! The Memorial staff lounge was a hotbed of activity November 28 through December 15, 2006, when staff joined forces for the 6th Annual Secret Chef luncheons. This year's Secret Chef raised $1,650 through free will donations from its diners. During this innovative fundraiser, volunteers from the libraries and beyond contributed their soup (over 75 gallons), plus breads, fruit, and desserts. Special events included a "Chili Cook Off," complete with award-winning "Green Bay Chili" donated by Milwaukee firefighters, and a "Chicken Soup Throw-down."  Three charities benefited from the generosity and culinary skills (and appetites) of the Libraries' staff and other campus visitors who stopped in for lunch: the Milwaukee Rescue Mission, The Companion Animal Resource and Adoption Center, and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Residential Treatment Center in Gallup, New Mexico. The Secret Chef blog recorded day-by-day menus.

BY THE NUMBERS

The Raynor turnstiles registered 3,000,000 on January 26th. The lucky student who entered at 3:15 p.m. received a gift box containing a mug and other library memorabilia. The new Raynor Memorial Libraries, which opened in August '03, celebrated the 1 million milestone in October '04 and the 2nd million just 13 months later, Nov. 15, 2005.

29.9 miles of books!! Recent space planning and shelving projections revealed the Libraries' collections encompass over 158,000 linear feet or almost 30 miles, counting all collections--books, journals, media, and manuscripts.
