Diné, the People
By Suzanne Eltsosie

Past, Present, and Place

  1. Review Diné, the People (History & Bibliography) or present a related summary as needed.
  2. Study the map of the United States with the Navajo Reservation. The Navajo Reservation (in black) stretches over parts of which states? Which other states are about the same size as the Navajo Reservation?
  3. Study the map of Dinétah, the Old Navajo Country Before 1800 and read and study In the Beginning (Creation Story & Vocabulary list)  and  Sacred Four Directions, Colors, and Mountains. Find east in your classroom. Discuss east as the direction of beginning for life and orientation. Post the names and colors of the directions on the appropriate walls and discuss the related Navajo and English vocabulary words. Dinétah is the ancient homeland of the original four Navajo clans and it has sacred places including many sacred mountains. Can you find them? Where did First Man and First Woman find the baby that became Changing Woman?
  4. Study the map of Navajo Country in 1800. Note the names of neighboring tribes in each of the four directions. Who were their neighbors?
  5. Study the map of the Navajo Reservation in 1868 and Today and read The Long Walk. The smaller 1868 reservation is black and inside of today’s larger reservation, which is gray. Why did the reservation get larger?
