A God-Given Right For A Chosen People In The Americas?

Activities

Role Research

The United States expanded under the notion of “Manifest Destiny" and in some ways, it still flourishes. To explore this concept, your teacher has assigned you to one of four groups, each with a role as Native Americans, Pioneers, Soldiers or Congressmen. Assume the role as it was lived during the late 19th century and use the resource links to explore how your character acted towards Manifest Destiny.

  • Describe your characters and their role in Manifest Destiny.
  • What drove them to do the things they did and said?
  • How did they affect the policies of the United States?

Presentations

  • Each group presents its findings to the class.
  • The class discusses the presentations.
  • Based on what the students believe to be true about Manifest Destiny, the teacher creates two sets of "PRO and "CON" debating teams.

Debate

  • In 15 minutes, each team establishes 10 points to argue.
  • The teacher flips a coin and establishes which team speaks first.
  • The first team gives their first point and defends it to the counter-point given by their opposing team.
  • The second team gives their first point and defends it to the counter-point given by their opposing team.
  • Repeat the last two steps until the students have debated all points that they have established.

Final Projects

  • Each student writes a one-page paper to show his/her understanding of Manifest Destiny.
  • The papers should use supporting examples to characterize Manifest Destiny based on what each student read and on what was discussed in class.
