November 2012—Marquette University Libraries presents authors Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull in a public lecture celebrating the 75th anniversary of the publication of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit.
"J. R. R. Tolkien and the Art of Middle-Earth"
Did you know that J. R. R. Tolkien, in addition to being a great writer, was also an accomplished artist? In fact, he illustrated the original editions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings! Come enjoy this engaging slide-show presentation by the two foremost experts on Tolkien's artwork. Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull are authors of the now classic J. R. R. Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator (1995) as well as the recent The Art of the Hobbit (2011).
The event is free and open to the Marquette and Milwaukee communities. Space is limited so please telephone the library archives by noon on Wednesday, November 7th to pre-register: (414) 288-7256. Two parking structures (Wells Street between 12th and 13th; and 16th St. between Wisconsin and Wells) are open to visitors for a fee; a campus map and driving directions to campus are here. Questions about any of the events may be addressed to archivist Bill Fliss by e-mail or phone (414) 288-5906.
This presentation is the second of three events planned for the 2012-2013 academic year to celebrate The Hobbit's 75th anniversary. Read more about the events planned for 2012-2013.
It is made possible by the Tolkien Archives Fund established by the late Richard G. Blackwelder and augmented by a generous donation from trustee emerita Mrs. Mercedes Hurley Hughes.
