Exhibit: Modern Authors

March 2015—“Modern Authors” Exhibit

Three celebrated writers of the modern era – H.L. Mencken, Sherwood Anderson, and Joseph Conrad—are the focus of a new exhibit on display in the Marquette University Libraries’ Department of Special Collections.

Drawing on Special Collection's extensive holdings of rare books, the exhibit features first editions of books (some signed), originals of works published in magazines, and other hard-to-find and lesser-known materials by the three authors. Works on display include a first edition of Conrad's first novel, Almayer's Folly; a photographic edition of Sherwood's only book of poetry, Mid-American Chants; and a first edition of Mencken's autobiography, Newspaper Days, 1899-1906.
