Greetings from the Dean

Welcome back and Happy New Year!
We hope you are well rested and that your semester is off to a good start. This year I did what I usually do as December gives way to a new year—I spent time thinking about my resolutions for 2012. I thought about losing weight, exercising, trying to be a better person, reading more and watching less television. No more “Dancing With the Stars” or reality shows about hoarding for me. Instead, this year I want to give new meaning to how might I be the difference for someone else.

New Year’s resolutions, we all know, are too hard to keep. Yet we also know that considered in earnest, we can be better, do better than the year before.

So, as dean, I am resolved to continue to support the staff of Raynor Memorial Libraries in their pursuit of the best possible service to the Marquette University community. We thought a lot about this in 2011 and will continue to do so throughout 2012 as we listen, communicate, collaborate, connect, deliver...More...

NEW STAFF APPOINTMENTS

Two new librarian appointments and three support staff appointments have been announced recently. Congratulations go to Dr. Tara Baillargeon, now head of Research and Instructional Services effective December 1. Tara comes to Marquette from Kansas State University Libraries, where she was head of faculty and graduate services and also served as an affiliated faculty member in women’s studies. Her doctoral dissertation (in educational leadership from Kansas State) focused on the development of an e-museum for the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum; her masters in library and information science is from the University of Western Ontario. DIGITAL MEDIA STUDIO

In response to increasing requests for video cameras for student digital projects, the Studio has added 10 Canon Vixia cameras and four new microphones (two lavalier and two hand-held). Collection News

The Libraries recently added a significant collection of e-books from ebrary. Numbering more than 70,000 titles spanning all academic subjects, the collection is expected to meet a growing demand from Marquette users, support distant learning, and provide anytime/anywhere access to scholarly e-books. Each item in ebrary is included in MARQCAT to enhance discovery and, in addition, simple and advanced searches may be conducted across the collection or within 15 subject areas. Ebrary offers a "Bookshelf" feature, allowing the reader to set up a personal account, tag items for a list, and use tools to navigate, print, take notes, use a colored highlighter, or easily export to RefWorks. Project MUSE, one of the most heavily used collections of contemporary e-journals (more than 500 titles) in the social sciences and humanities, launched a new interface effective January 2. Features of the new search interface include faceted searching, enhanced browsing by subject area, new access icons, "search inside" feature, and a search box on every page. Please note that Marquette has not yet purchased any of the e-book content being offered on MUSE; the default search results show only the content to which the searcher has full-text access. ATTENTION ALUMNI

Thanks to the Libraries' partnership with Marquette's Alumni Relations, Marquette alumni now may receive access to two comprehensive journal databases. The access, long-requested by alumni, includes two EBSCOhost research databases: Academic Search and Business Source. More...

The 15th Annual Dittman Library Research Competition is now open for submissions through March 9. $200 case prizes are awarded in three categories. Submissions must have received an "A" grade and have been written for a Marquette course during the 2011 calendar year. exhibits

"Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country," March 14 to April 27. The Libraries are hosting a national traveling exhibit about the 1804 to 1806 expedition and its encounter with more than 50 native tribes. The exhibit will be located in the Raynor Library lobby and accessible for viewing during all library hours. More...

 

The Saint John's Bible Heritage Edition is now permanently displayed in the Archives Reading Room (Raynor 3rd floor). Each weekday when classes are in session pages are turned to a new illumination according to this Jan.-April schedule. Read about the acquisition or see the library's resource guide.

ATTENTION FACULTY

Answer questions about copyright here! "Copyright and Fair Use in the Digital Age" is a new online tutorial created by the Libraries' Eric Kowalik in collaboration with Jon Pray and members of the university copyright committee. The tutorial reviews fair use, requesting permission, the Creative Commons, and Open Source content by presenting actual scenarios that faculty face. The Libraries' copyright site is another source of Marquette resources on copyright and fair use. More...

MARQCAT CHANGES

A recent vendor upgrade has enhanced searching in the MARQCATplus interface. Since its initial installation, more than one year ago, users have asked for a way to do more precise searching than is offered in the default keyword search box. The "facets" (gray boxes on the left side of the results screen) offer one way of narrowing after a search is done. Now, after a search is run, click on the "Advanced Search" choice, found under the search box, and see the choices for narrowing, such as format, language, date, collection, and location.
