CQ Researcher   from CQ Press  

Contains full text articles on controversial current events and social, political, economic, and international issues.  Each issue includes topic summaries, historical perspectives, recent developments, opposing viewpoints, and sources for additional research.  This resource is an EXCELLENT starting point for research on contemporary topics.  1960 to present.  VPN required for off-campus access.

 
Defining Gender, 1450-1910   from Adam Matthew Pubs.  

Database of primary sources dating between 1450 and 1910 copied largely from research libraries in Great Britain.  Primarily "advice literature," the sources address such themes as household management, education, leisure, shopping, sexuality, consumption, and sports.  The material is arranged thematically, along with essays by leading scholars.  The database is in five segments.  Defining Gender includes indexing that directs researchers to larger holdings of similar literature available on microform.  VPN required for off-campus access.

 
Dissertations and Theses   from ProQuest  

This database contains records for more than 2 million doctoral dissertations and master's theses.  Also included is the full text content for nearly 900,000 dissertations.  Includes extensive coverage of North American graduate schools, with coverage of some European universities beginning in 1989.  Includes bibliographic record of dissertations written in the United Kingdom and Ireland from as far back as 1716, with full abstracts, for titles available from 1986 in 'ProQuest Dissertations and Theses.  A separate database contains the subset of Marquette University doctoral dissertations in full text.

 
Ethnic NewsWatch   from ProQuest  

Indexes and provides full text articles from newspapers and magazines published for ethnic communities in the U.S. Some material is in Spanish. Includes publications for African Americans, European Americans, Hispanic and Latino Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, Jewish Americans, and Arab Americans.  1991 to present.

 
Film & Television Literature Index  from EBSCO  Search Tips  

Subject coverage includes film & television theory, preservation & restoration, writing, production, cinematography, technical aspects, and reviews.  The database has been designed for use by a diverse audience that includes film scholars, college students, and general viewers.  Covers over 300 journal and magazine titles for film and television reviews, scholarly and critical analysis of cinema and television, and articles of popular interest about film and television.  Provides cover-to-cover indexing and abstracts for more than 300 publications and selected coverage of 300 more.  About half the journals and magazines are film periodicals and the other half cover film and television with some regularity.  Full-text for 50 journal titles is provided.  Coverage varies by journal.

General Social Survey  from National Opinion Research Center  

A dataset compiled from personal interviews of over 40,000 U.S. participants responding to over 3.500 different questions from the time period of 1972-1998.  Main areas covered by the GSS include: socioeconomic status, social mobility, social control, the family, race relations, sex relations, civil liberties and morality.  Other areas include: religion, health, culture, job experiences, interracial friendships, gender, emotions, political preferences, etc.  Numerical data is in SPSS portable file format (readable by SPSS program.)  Accompanying Codebook (in PDF format) is included with dataset.  A web-based version of the GSS Codebook is freely available from the following Web URL: http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/GSS/  In addition, a print copy of the GSS Codebook is available for limited checkout from the Raynor Library Reserve Desk

Journal Citation Reports - Science & Social Sciences  from ISI  

This unique multidisciplinary resource presents quantifiable statistical data that provides a systematic way to determine the relative importance of journals within their subject categories, including highest impact journals, most frequently used journals, ‘hottest’ journals, and largest journals. The "Science" portion covers about 5,000 leading international science journals from ISI database and the "Social Science" portion covers 1700 leading journals from Social Science Citation Index.  Basic information about each journal is also included, e.g. publisher, frequency, title changes, subject categories assigned, etc.  Covers 2004 to 2006.  VPN recommended for off-campus access.

Vanderbilt Television News Archive    from Vanderbilt  

Extensive index of television news indexing more than 30,000 individual network evening news broadcasts from the major U.S. national broadcast networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and Fox News and more than 9,000 hours of special news-related programming including ABC's Nightline since 1989.  Includes online streaming video of NBC newscasts from August 5, 1968 to the present and CNN news broadcasts beginning in 1995.  Current material will be made available 72 hours after originally broadcast.  Note: Requires free RealPlayer software to play video clips.

 
World News Archive—Latin American Newspapers  from Newsbank  

The World Newspaper Archive will ultimately offer online full-text access to major newspapers from Africa, Latin America, Asia, and Central and Eastern Europe.  It opens with part of its collection from Latin America, including papers from Chile, Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico.  When complete it will offer 35 papers with long publishing histories from the 19th and 20th centuries.
