Several databases are provided: EBSCO Animals - Provides in-depth information on a variety of topics relating to animals.  The database consists of indexing, abstracts, and full text records describing the nature and habitat of familiar animals.  Middle Search Plus - Provides full text for nearly 100 magazines covering general topics appropriate for middle and junior high school students.  Primary Search - Provides full text for over 70 children's magazines and over 300 children's pamphlets, designed for the elementary school student.  Professional Development Collection - provides a collection of more than 550 education journals, including more than 350 peer-reviewed titles.  This database also contains more than 200 educational reports.  Coverage varies by database and journal.  Teacher Reference Center - provides indexing and abstracts for 270+ popular teacher and administrator journals and magazines.  Book Collection - Nonfiction - divided into elementary, middle, and high school collections.  Educational Administration Abstracts, and ERIC are also available.

Comprehensive database sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education.  It indexes and provides abstracts for journal articles and specialized reports in educational fields such as early childhood education and development, perception and cognition, and testing.  1966 to present.  VPN required if off-campus and also using RefWorks.

 
ERIC  from U.S. Dept of Education  Search Tips  

Provides unlimited access to more the than 1.2 million bibliographic records of journal articles and other education-related materials.  Advanced search interface allows for multiple concept searching.  Journal articles are generally not available full-text within the database but the records have a Find in a Library link that connects to Findit@MU for locating Marquette’s holdings.

 
PsycINFO  from Ovid  Search Tips

Coverage varies widely over the history of the title.  Indexes articles and provides descriptive, non-evaluative abstracts.  Provides content summaries and tables of contents for book chapters and books.  Subject coverage includes basic and applied psychology, abnormal and clinical psychology, experimental psychology, human and animal development, social psychology, professional psychology and educational psychology.  Also includes bibliographic citations and abstracts of periodical articles, reports and dissertations, books and chapters.  1987 to present for books and chapters; 1872 to present for journal articles and other material.  VPN required if off-campus and also using RefWorks.

 
Web of Science  from ISI  Search Tips

Combines Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, and Arts and Humanities Citation Index in one source.  Indexes can be searched individually or combined.  Search by words in author, title, keyword, abstract, journal title and author affiliation fields.  A unique Cited Reference Search feature allows ‘forward’ searching by locating articles that have cited an older document.  1980 to present.  VPN recommnded for off-campus access.

Black Studies Center  from Chadwyck-Healy  

The Black Studies Center is comprised of several databases including the Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience, International Index to Black Periodicals, the full text of the Chicago Defender 1910-1975 an influential black newspaper, and Black Literature Index.  Ultimately, Black Studies Center will also include ProQuest Dissertations for Black Studies.

 
Book Collection: Nonfiction   from EBSCO  

Three nonfiction collections are included: elementary (1,290 titles), middle (3,089 titles), and high school (2,448 title).

 
Chronicle of Higher Education  from Chronicle of Higher Education  

Complete text of the weekly edition, plus a searchable archive; commentary and essays in the weekly Chronicle Review, plus exclusive digital content, such as blogs and e-newsletters; data from special reports in database format; podcasts, slide shows, and video. Site contains a summary of available features.  September 1989 to present.

 
Defining Gender, 1450-1910  from Adam Matthew Pubs.  

Database of primary sources dating between 1450 and 1910 copied largely from research libraries in Great Britain.  Primarily "advice literature," the sources address such themes as household management, education, leisure, shopping, sexuality, consumption, and sports.  The material is arranged thematically, along with essays by leading scholars.  The database is in five segments.  Defining Gender includes indexing that directs researchers to larger holdings of similar literature available on microform.  VPN required for off-campus access.

 
Dissertations and Theses  from ProQuest  

This database contains records for more than 2 million doctoral dissertations and master's theses.  Also included is the full text content for nearly 900,000 dissertations.  Includes extensive coverage of North American graduate schools, with coverage of some European universities beginning in 1989.  Includes bibliographic record of dissertations written in the United Kingdom and Ireland from as far back as 1716, with full abstracts, for titles available from 1986 in 'ProQuest Dissertations and Theses.  A separate database contains the subset of Marquette University doctoral dissertations in full text.

Francis  from Ovid  

Multi-disciplinary database produced in France which indexes over 4,200 journals in the humanities and social sciences since 1984.  The subject descriptors and the abstracts are in both English and French.  It is particularly strong in religion, art history, literature, psychology, philosophy, education, linguistics, archeology, information science, and sociology.  Included are bibliographic citations to books as well as book chapters, journal articles, conference papers, exhibition catalogs, reports, legislation, teaching materials, and french dissertations.  1984 to present.

 
Historic Documents  from CQ Press  

Reviewing each year’s major events since 1972, Historic Documents reproduces official public statements; noteworthy court decisions; reports by governmental agencies, including some from the United Nations; special studies by public and private groups; and speeches by prominent figures.  The documents have introductions providing background, a summary, and indication of subsequent events.  The online version can be searched by keyword, title, and topic.  There is also a cumulative index.

 
Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR)  from I.C.P.S.R.  

Abstracts, longitudinal studies, project overviews, data collection instruments, and descriptions of variables found in the dataset.  Most datasets and documentation can be downloaded, from on campus computers, for research and personal use.  ICPSR holds a wealth of data from a number of sources.  Among them:

International Index to Black Periodicals Full Text - see Black Studies Center
 

This unique multidisciplinary resource presents quantifiable statistical data that provides a systematic way to determine the relative importance of journals within their subject categories, including highest impact journals, most frequently used journals, ‘hottest’ journals, and largest journals. The "Science" portion covers about 5,000 leading international science journals from ISI database and the "Social Science" portion covers 1700 leading journals from Social Science Citation Index.  Basic information about each journal is also included, e.g. publisher, frequency, title changes, subject categories assigned, etc.  Covers 2004 to 2006.  VPN recommended for off-campus access.

This resource is available to all residents of Milwaukee, including Marquette students who reside on or near campus.  You must have a valid Milwaukee Public Library card and personal identification number (PIN) to gain free access to this subscription database.

 
Mental Measurements Yearbook  from EBSCO  Search Tips  

A comprehensive guide to over 2,000 contemporary testing instruments, contains information essential for a complete evaluation of testing and assessment products covering such diverse areas as psychology, education, business, and leadership.  Entries contain descriptive information (e.g., test purpose, publisher, pricing) and edited review(s) written by leading content area experts.  To be included in the MMY, a test must be commercially available, be published in the English language, and be new or revised since it last appeared in the series.  Coverage is from the 9th Yearbook (1985) to the present.  Previous yearbooks are located in the Raynor Reference Collection BF 431 M44.

Minority Data Resource Center  from I.C.P.S.R.  

Provides educators, researchers and students with data resources that can be used in the analysis of issues affecting racial and ethnic minority populations in the United States.  Data available for secondary analysis through MDRC span a variety of topics including housing, health, education, crime, income and wealth, youth behavior, and politics.  Ethnic and racial oversampling, as well as large sample sizes permit opportunities to analyze and learn about issues that affect race and ethnic minority populations.

Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN)  from I.C.P.S.R.  

A large-scale, interdisciplinary study of the complex influences of community, family, and individual factors on human development over time, specifically how families, schoos, and neighborhoods affect child and adolescent development both positively and negatively.  Includes methodology used to gather PHDCN data, instruments, and scales used in key analyses.  Longitudinal studies following 6,000 children, adolescents, and young adults.  Community surveys conducted in 1995-1995 and 2001-2002.  Systematic Social Observations from 1995.  A searchable database of citations of known published works resulting from analyses of the PHDCN data is also available. Before retrieving data users will be asked to set up a "MyData" account and provide information to verify their Marquette status.  Tutorials on downloading and reading data into SAS, SPSS, and STATA are avaialble in the Data User Help Center.

TeachingBooks generates enthusiasm for books and reading by providing easy access to authors, illustrators and exceptional book resources all in one place.  Included are original, in-studio movies of authors and illustrators, thousands of book guides with activities for the library and classroom, and hundreds of audio excerpts of book readings for grades PreK-12.  TeachingBooks requires that you sign-up for a user profile, which essentially involves registering an email address and choosing a password for log-in.

 
Testing & Education Reference Center   from Gale  

Online version of the well-known Peterson’s Guides to higher education.  Also includes access to sample college entrance exams and certification and licensing tests which can be taken and scored online.  (Note: This requires registering for a free account within the database.)  Includes in-depth information on colleges and universities, graduate and professional programs, distance learning, corporate training, available scholarships and awards, preparatory entrance tests and more.  Available online practice tests include college entrance exams as well as certification and licensing tests.  Also available are online test preparation books.  Also included are sample college exams which can be taken and scored - Graduate Record Exam (GRE), Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), Law Schools Admission Test (LSAT), Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), and Miller Analogies Test (MAT).  Sample civil service and licensing exams include: police, firefighter, postal, clerical, U.S. citizenship, etc.

 
Tests in Print  from EBSCO  

Produced by the Buros Institute of Mental Measurements at the University of Nebraska, Tests in Print (TIP) serves as a comprehensive bibliography to all known commercially available tests that are currently in print in the English language.  Tests in Print provides information to users including test purpose, test publisher, in-print status, price, test acronym, intended test population, administration times, publication date(s), and test author(s).  A score index permits users to identify what is being measured by each test.  TIP is directly linked to the critical, candid test reviews published in the Mental Measurements Yearbook (MMY) series.  Users can research current test information from the TIP series and continue their search to all available test reviews published in the MMY series.
