Literature Online (LION)   from Chadwyck-Healy  Search Tips  

LION contains the full text of 350,000 works of English and American poetry, drama, and prose from the Anglo-Saxon period through the twentieth century.  Literary criticism can be found through ABELL (Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature, containing over 854,000 citations for scholarly books, articles, and reviews from 1920 to the present) and MLAIB (MLA International Bibliography, with its 1.7 million records from 1963 on), including the full text from 160 journals.  The database can be searched by author, text, or criticism and reference.  LION also offers the option of browsing the complete contents, full text journals, author index, or poets on screen (a multimedia feature).  Literary texts range from the seventh to the twentieth century.  Journal full text covers from 1988 to the present.

 
MLA International Bibliography (via LION)  from Chadwyck-Healy  

Bibliography of scholarship in literature, language, linguistics, and folklore.  Journal articles compose approximately 75% of the database.  Monographs(books), book chapters, conference proceedings, working papers, abstracts of dissertations and book series are included; book reviews are not.  Print, oral, and audiovisual sources are indexed.  Some full text included.  MLAIB is a component database of Literature Online (LION).  1920 to present (plus JSTOR journals dating as far back as the 1880s)

17th & 18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers  from Gale  

Containing 1270 titles and almost 1 million pages this collection represents the largest and most comprehensive collection of early English news media.  The Topic Guide contains more information about this collection.

 
19th Century Masterfile   from Paratext  

Index to nineteenth century periodical articles, information about books, newspaper articles, and government publications.  The core sources of this database are Poole's Index to Periodical Literature (1802-1906) and Stead's Index to Periodicals (1890-1902).  The Index to the New York Daily Tribune 1875-1906 is also available. Patent and government document indices include subject matter index of patents issued by the U.S. (1790-1873); descriptive catalog of the government publications of the U.S. (1774-1881); compilation of the message and papers of the presidents (1789-1897); Hansard's Index to debates, House of Commons only (1803-1830); and Cobett's Parliamentary history of England (1066-1803).  Dates of coverage varies but primarily 1802-1906.

Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (ABELL)  from Chadwyck-Healy   Search Tips  

Subject areas covered by ABELL include: English language: syntax, phonology, lexicology, semantics, stylistics, and dialectology; English literature: prose, poetry, fiction, film, biography, travel writing, literary theory, reviews, and studies of individual authors; Bibliography, including manuscript studies, textual studies, and the history of publishing; Traditional culture of the English-speaking world, including custom, belief narrative, song, dance, and material culture.  ABELL is a component database of Literature Online (LION).  To search ABELL, select "Criticism and Reference" from LION's main screen, then "Criticism" at the top center.  The resulting search screen offers a combined MLAIB/ABELL search, or the user may select either of the critical databases independently.  Primary coverage is 1920 to present; some items published between 1892 and 1919 have been indexed retrospectively.

Arts and Humanities Citation Index  from ISI  

Web of Science combines Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, and Arts and Humanities Citation Index in one source.  Indexes can be searched individually or combined.  Search by words in author, title, keyword, abstract, journal title and author affiliation fields.  A unique Cited Reference Search feature allows ‘forward’ searching by locating articles that have cited an older document.  1980 to present.

 
Black Studies Center  from Chadwyck-Healy  

The Black Studies Center is comprised of several databases including the Schomburg Studies on the Black Experience, International Index to Black Periodicals, the full text of the Chicago Defender 1910-1975 an influential black newspaper, and Black Literature Index.  Ultimately, Black Studies Center will also include ProQuest Dissertations for Black Studies.

 
The Cambridge Companions to Literature and Classics  from Cambridge Collections Online  

Contains 1500+ comprehensive essays on major authors, periods and genres.  For the author Companions each writer is placed in literary and historical context; their major works are analysed, either in separate chapters or grouped according to theme, and their influence on later writers assessed.  The generic and topical Companions cover periods of English literature such as Old English or the Victorian Novel, and literary genres such as Modernism or Greek Tragedy.  The Companions to Classical Civilisation examine key periods and aspects of the civilisations of ancient Greece and Rome.

 
Chicago Manual of Style   from Univ. of Chicago Press  

The Chicago Manual of Style, "the bible of the publishing and research community," was first published in 1906, and now presented online in its revised 15th edition.  The complete site contents are browsable, indexed, and fully searchable.  15th edition (2003) plus current, updated Q&As.

Dissertations and Theses   from ProQuest  

This database contains records for more than 2 million doctoral dissertations and master's theses.  Also included is the full text content for nearly 900,000 dissertations.  Includes extensive coverage of North American graduate schools, with coverage of some European universities beginning in 1989.  Includes bibliographic record of dissertations written in the United Kingdom and Ireland from as far back as 1716, with full abstracts, for titles available from 1986 in 'ProQuest Dissertations and Theses.  A separate database contains the subset of Marquette University doctoral dissertations in full text.

 
Early American Imprint Series 1: Evans, 1639-1800  from Readex  

Also known as the "Evans Bibliography". Full text database of publications from colonial America and the early republic (1639-1800).  Users can do a field searches—author, title, genre, place of publication, publisher —as well as keyword queries in the full text.  They can also take advantage of a sophisticated subject category system.

 
Early English Books Online (EEBO)  from Chadwyck-Healy  Search Tips  

Digital facsimile page images of virtually every work printed in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and British North America, and works in English printed elsewhere from 1473 - 1700.  The collection contains over 100,000 titles listed in Pollard & Redgrave's Short-Title Catalogue (1475-1640) and Wing's Short-Title Catalogue (1641-1700), as well as the Thomason Tracts (1640-1661).  A wealth of subject areas includes English literature, history, philosophy, linguistics, theology, music, fine arts, education, mathematics, and science.  The Basic search mode allows searching using a combination of the following fields: keywords, author, title, subject, bibliographic number (from the short-title catalogues), or date.  More about EEBO.

 
Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO)  from Gale  

ECCO is the electronic edition of The Eighteenth Century, the world’s largest collection of microfilmed printed books.  The collection contains works and literature in seven broad categories: history and geography; social sciences and fine arts; medicine, science, and technology; literature and language; religion and philosophy; reference works; and law.  Covers more than 180,000 English and foreign-language works published in the U.K., along with thousands of important works from the Americas.  With works from both major and minor authors of the period, this digitized collection of books, broadsides, sermons, pamphlets, bibles, and other rare materials offers researchers access to over 33 millions pages of text from the British Library and 1,500 libraries worldwide.  Included in this resource are the complete works of 28 prominent eighteenth-century authors, such as Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Johnson, Thomas Paine, Alexander Pope, Adam Smith, Jonathan Swift, and John Wesley.  The database features full text searching, plus search and browsing capabilities via keyword, general subject area, title, author, language, date, and more.

Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics  from Elsevier  

Alphabetically arranged with extensive cross-referencing this encyclopedia is an authoritative source of information about any particular aspect of linguistics or its applications.  Included in this online edition are over 7,500,000 words, audio files, extensive list of commonly used abbreviations, 200 language maps, and a list of languages of the world (including information on the number of speakers, language family, etc.).

 
English Short-Title Catalogue (ESTC)   from British Library  

The English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC) describes works printed in any language in England or its dependencies from the beginning of printing through the end of the eighteenth century, as well as works printed in English anywhere else in the world during that period.  Appended to each record is a list of libraries which have reported holding a copy of the item described.  Covers 1473 to 1800.

 
Everyday Life and Women in America, c1820-1900  from Adam Matthew  Search Tips
