Access to Library E-Resources From Home

Library e-resources are available via cable modems, dial-up, and DSL. The information below refers to e-resources such as indexing and abstracting databases, full-text resources, and e-books. It does not apply to electronic class reserve materials.

Requirements | Two Methods | About the VPN

Requirements

  • You must have a current MUID.
  • Your 14-digit barcode number must be entered into the Libraries patron database. If you receive the message "Sorry, the information you submitted was invalid. Please try again" your barcode number is not in the library database. Click here for additional information.
  • You will need an active account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
  • You must have a current full version of browser software (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, Opera, etc.). Database vendors take advantage of capabilities found in new browser versions. Older browser versions may limit your ability to utilize searching features offered by some vendors. Since there are browser compatibility issues with some database vendors it is also advisable to have more than one browser installed on your computer. If one browser is presenting problems switch to the other installed browser. This will help determine if the problem is vendor related or browser related.

Two methods: without a download or with a download

Without a Download: "using the proxy server".

  1. Connect to your ISP.
  2. Open a browser window and go to the Raynor Memorial Libraries home page. Find a link to the resource you wish to use (e.g. databases). Click on the link.
  3. You will be asked to enter your name and 14-digit MU ID barcode number before entering the database and beginning a search session. The screen will look like the example below.
  4. After you enter your name and barcode, the proxy server checks them in our patron database, and if found, you will be allowed to enter the database and begin searching.

If you are a current student/faculty member and cannot access databases via your barcode number, please contact the Raynor Library Circulation desk at (414) 288 -7555.

With a Download: "using the VPN".

  1. Connect to your ISP.
  2. Activate the Virtual Private Network client software provided by Information Technology Services (ITS).
  3. Open a browser window and go to the Raynor Memorial Libraries home page. Find the resource you wish to use, click on the link, and you will be able to begin searching immediately.
