News articles (magazines & newspapers)

* A Note about ProQuest:
On this page, there are asterisks before the names of three databases: they are all from the vendor ProQuest. Although the ProQuest search interface will be identical for them, their content is not. They each contain unique material.mags.gif (3292 bytes)

Trade magazines:

Trade magazines are the Time and Newsweek for particular industries; that is, they report on current news, best practices, research and legislation of interest to the particular industry.  They have industry relevant advertising and 'how to' articles.  Usually, their titles alone will tell you precisely for which industry they are intended.  For example, you can easily figure out who reads the magazines Candy Industy and Teacher!  They are a great resource for news about industries.

Local Business Magazines and Newspapers:  newspaper.gif (1492 bytes)

Local newspapers and magazines are often the only source of information about small, private, or subsidiary companies. Only rarely will they also have articles useful in industry research.
The Wall Street Journal, however, is the premier business newspaper in the US--it does have very current and useful articles on industries.

  • * Wall Street Journal:  The ultimate business newspaper in the US!  Full-text from 1984 - present, indexing back to 1982.
    Search Tip: Use the "Advanced Search" tab. Remember to use the thesaurus to find the 'official' heading to describe your industry. Then, most important, use the subject heading 'industry profiles' to specify that you want articles about the entire industry, not just one company!

Scholarly journalsSO02005A.gif (748 bytes)

Scholarly journal articles are less likely to be helpful for current news, but you will find in-depth analyses of many aspects and developments in industries.

  • * ABI/Inform:   ~1,700 journals; indexing back to 1971, with full-text for about two-thirds of the titles beginning mostly in 1992.  The 'premier' scholarly business database.
    Search Tip: Use the "Advanced Search" tab. Then use the "browse topics" feature to find the 'official' headings to describe your industry. Also add the subject heading 'industry profiles'.
  • Business SourceElite:  ~2,400 journals, only ~1,000 full-text; coverage begins mostly in 1990.  This is the only source for the full-text of the Harvard Business Review at present.
