- Investopedia.com Dictionary: The emphasis
here is on finance and investment, but it is still quite useful. Very annoying ads, though.

Can be very slow to load.

three-volume set that covers manufacturing; extractives, manufacturing, and services; and
infrastructure and services.
- Small Business Profiles (Raynor Ref HD 62.7 .S61 1995) Descriptions of
small niche industries. Aimed at entrepreneurs, but still very useful for
background.
- Standard & Poor's Industry Surveys (Raynor Ref HC 106.6
.S74) A classic source; it reports on 52 major industries.

While the most common reason to use a directory is to learn about an individual
company, there are other uses. Some directories provide ranking information,
usually by sales, not just an alphabetical list.

- Ward's Business Directory of U.S. Private and Public Companies (Raynor Ref HG

rankings of companies by state, sales, and SIC and NAICS codes.

These sources all focus on a single industry. They usually contain both analysis of the
industry, some statistics, and profiles
