Proquest Direct – ProQuest provides indexing, abstracts and selected full text or full images of articles in a wide range of magazines and journals. It includes general interest and news publications as well as selected scholarly journals in a wide variety of disciplines. 

Badgerlinklink to a number of databases which provide full-text of thousands of journal and magazine articles: a general periodicals index, an academic index—Academic Search Elite, an alternative health index, several business indexes, etc. 

Biography Resource Center --Provides full-text biographies on thousands of individuals both living and deceased.

  Britannica Online – contains full-text of the print New Encyclopedia Britannica, including thousands of hotlinks to selected Internet resources.  Also contains the “Year in Review” covering highlights of each year going back to 1998.  Includes Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary.

  CQ Researcher   --Each issue focuses on a specific topic presenting alternative views and a bibliography.  Has its own topical index.  Examples of topics covered:  cyber-crime, school safety, single-sex schools, homeland security, medical care for the uninsured, chemical and biological weapons, mental health insurance, civil liberties in wartime, welfare reform, etc.

  Ethnic NewsWatch – full-text articles from over 170 newspapers from minority presses in the U.S.  Represented are newspapers from the African-American, Hispanic, Jewish, Arab-Americans, Native American , etc. communities.

  FactSearch – Provides facts and statistics on current social, economic, political, environmental and health issues, derived from some 1,000 newspapers, periodicals, newsletters and documents.

  GenderWatch – Full-text coverage of gender studies with an emphasis on women and women’s studies, within journals, newspapers, newsletters, etc.; 1974 to the present.

  Issues and Controversies@Facts.com -- Articles provide the history or development of an issue, current overview, varying opinions a prediction of future developments and a short bibliography.  Has a topical index.  Examples of topics covered:  television violence, human cloning, national identification cards,  drunk driving, fairness of college entrance exams, hate speech, animal rights, etc.

  Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe – Full-text news and information service that provides access to newspapers, magazines, wire services, transcripts, business and legal information, etc.  (Also under Reference portion, contains access to the current World Almanac as well as to polls, surveys and quotations.)

  Milwaukee Journal Sentinel – Full-text of the newspaper’s locally generated stories – 1997 to the present via Proquest’s Wisconsin Newspapers and 1994 to the present via Lexis-Nexis.

  National Newspapers – Full-text of 27 major newspapers. (Note:  there is some overlap of newspaper titles with Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe. However, National Newspapers has access to the full-text of the WALL STREET JOURNAL which Lexis-Nexis does not.)

  Polling the Nations – Contains over 400,000 polling questions and results.

  Tablebase – Provides statistics. Subject emphasis is on business but it also covers broader subject areas, such as trends and demographics .

 : Statistical Abstract of the United States, 2005 edition. Raynor Information Desk has latest edition. Raynor Ref. Collection has latest five years. Many of the older editions  (going back to 1926)  are in Memorial Library general collection  HA 202 .S76

Online 2005 edition is also available on the Web at the following address:

This is an excellent source which is compiled by the U.S. government.  This can be used  to locate statistics on all types of topics:  population, marriages, divorces, educational, labor, household, crime, etc.   Has topic index in the back – number given refers to table number and not to the number of the page.

  World Almanac and Book of Facts Ref. Desk  latest edition.   Many  of the older editions going back to 1928 are in the Memorial Library general collection .  AY67.N5 W7

A popular book containing all types of statistics:  population, household, health, etc. – some from government statistics and others from surveys.  Examples of the types of provided:  10 leading causes of death, number of motor vehicle accidents, use of alcohol and cigarettes by age groups, etc.  (Current version also available via Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe service under Reference section.)
