Use the format templates below to build a correct citation.

MLA APA


The information below includes examples for two book formats (single author and edited book).  For a full explanation for other possibilities (reference books, reports, government publications, etc), please see the style manuals of APA and MLA.  These manuals are available at the information desk in Raynor Library.

 

MLA Works Cited Format


Formula:

1. name of author or editor
2. book title
3. place of publication (city or city/state or city/country)
4. publisher name
5. year of publication

It would look like this:
     Lastname, Firstname.  Book Title.  City: Publisher, Year.
Examples:

Single Author
     Fitzgerald, F. Scott. The Great Gatsby.  New York: Scribner's, 1953.

     Lee, Harper. To Kill a Mockingbird.  Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1960.
Edited Book
     Payne, Richard, ed. Tantric Buddhism in East Asia. Boston: Wisdom
            Publications, 2006.  Fairbrother, Peter and Al Rainnie, eds.  
            Globalisation, State, and Labour.  London: Routledge, 2006.


APA References Format

Formula:

1. name of author or editor
2. year of publication
3. book title
4. place of publication (city or city/state or city/country)
5. publisher name

It would look like this:

     Lastname, First Initial(s). (Year). Book title. City: Publisher.
Examples:

Single Author
     Fitzgerald, F. S. (1953).  The great Gatsby. New York: Scribner's.

Edited Book
