Economics
This is most likely to be the “guns and butter” debate. Can we pay for both
war and a good life at home? This same debate is taking place again now, regarding the
conflict in Iraq.

Has an essay on the economy of the US during the Vietnam war.
The Vietnam War: an Almanac
Raynor Reference DS 557.73 .V5663 1985
Has a short essay on the costs of the war, both in terms of casualties, and money and
equipment.
For primary source material (contemporary, eye witness, or insider reports and accounts), use:
New York Times Historical database: search on the phrase “guns and butter”. Limit to either ‘front
page’ or ‘editorial’, and to the 1965 – 1970 time period.

Entry: “Violence in Films and Television”.
This 12-page essay gives a good overview of the issues surrounding the portrayal of violence
in general, rather than specifically about the Vietnam War.
The Vietnam Experience: a Concise Encyclopedia of American Literature, Songs, and Films

This book gives summaries and descriptions of artistic works (movies, books, songs) about the
war.

Use the tables of contents and indexes in books to focus in on those chapters that are most
likely to be useful to your topic.

Use the databases ProQuest Research Library and Academic Search Elite. Try searches such
as these:

Ethical, Philosophical and Religious Questions about War
For these questions, you will find some great encyclopedia articles about the ethics of war in
general in the encyclopedias below. Look especially for the phrase “just
war”. Also, in philosophical discussions, war is usually discussed simultaneously with
peace, so look for entries on peace also.

Adverse health effects of chemical agents used during war: Who should take responsibility for
reversing (as much as possible) and compensating for these? Does the affected
population—soldiers versus noncombatants versus natives and their children—make
a difference in the answer?
