Using Library Resources

As a student at Marquette, you have access to a wide range of exceptional resources through the university library system. Some of the library's resources are accessible through MARQCAT, the library catalog. Others are not listed in MARQCAT, but can still be found in the library.

Resources listed in MARQCAT:

Books
To find the most recent books on your topic, use the WORDS search screen in MARQCAT. Enter your keywords and enter a date range at the bottom. The results will appear in reverse chronological order with the most recent books first.

If you need a book that is "In Process" or "On Order", request the book using the online In Process Form.

Periodicals
To look for a magazine or journal, use the TITLE option on the main menu in MARQCAT. Be sure to use the full title.

Select the full record of your title from the results list. The full record will give you holdings and location information. Newer issues are shelved loose in the "New Periodicals" section of the library. Older issues are bound and shelved in "Bound Periodicals", microfilmed, or archived in an online database. The record will indicate the format and by clicking on the "latest received" link, you can see what status the issues are in: "Arrived", "Bound" or "To Bind" (at the bindery).

Videos
Marquette's libraries have over 2500 videos. Select SUBJECT HEADING search in MARQCAT and enter "videos" to see a complete list.
You may also look up specific videos by TITLE or use the director’s, producer’s, or writer’s name in an AUTHOR search. You can also use a WORDS search by typing in a keyword and "videos".

Conference Proceedings
Papers presented at professional meetings and conferences may be published as a separate, one-time publication; as part of a journal or periodical; or as a part of a series of publications produced by an organization or publisher. The most reliable method of determining if the library has a proceedings publication is to search MARQCAT using the WORDS search option. Try to use keywords that are as distinct and clear as possible.

Resources not in MARQCAT:

University Archives and Manuscripts
Online descriptive inventories for the following are available at the Department of Special Collections and University Archives.

administrative files
university films
photographs
audio and video recordings
faculty and alumni papers
