Get the Information: Using MARQCAT

MARQCAT is the catalog for Marquette's two libraries: Raynor Memorial Libraries and the Law Library. It provides availability information for all the libraries' resources, as well as access to class reserves.

Types of searches

WORDS search
Type the words you are looking for in any order in the search box. A WORDS search will find items which have the words you entered in names, contents notes, tables of contents, subject headings, or the title. Avoid using very common words alone to limit your results. For example, searching "women" retrieves 32,000 records while "women explorers" retrieves only seven. The Signpost section on Search Terms also discusses words searches.

SUBJECT search
Click on the Subject Headings link and type in any topic in the SUBJECT search box. This will retrieve a list of the relevant Library of Congress subject headings. Subject headings are standardized terms and phrases used to describe the overall topics of a book and identify all books relating to the same topics. If your search terms do not appear on the list of relevent subject headings, the catalog will provide a link for you to do an automatic key word search.

TITLE search
The TITLE search is ideal when you know the specific title of a book, magazine, journal, electronic or audiovisual item. Enter the Title (or as much of it as you know) in the TITLE search box. MARQCAT will search for an exact match up to the last letter typed.

AUTHOR search
When you are looking for work by a specific person whether writer, composer, performer or artist, use the AUTHOR option. In the AUTHOR search box, type the last name and as much of the first name as you know.
