The orientation will take place during the first four
weeks you are in Madrid if you participate in the fall semester, and
during the first three weeks of the spring semester. It consists of
the required course "Language, Culture and Society of Spain"
which includes 24 class hours of language instruction, emphasizing speaking
and listening skills; and lectures on culture, literature, art, and
history. The course carries 3 semester credits. Marquette students may
take this course to fulfill an elective in the Spanish major or minor,
or as a general elective. Students from other institutions should check
with their home institutions regarding the transferability of credit
for this course.
In addition to this opportunity to refresh your Spanish
skills before beginning the regular semester-long courses, your transition
will be eased through an introduction to Madrid and the customs of Spain
through bus and walking tours of the city, sessions on cultural differences
between the US and Spain, and sessions on adjusting to a new culture.
Credit for the course "Language, Culture and Society
of Spain" is granted only upon completion of all elements of the
orientation, as well as completion of 12 credits of regular semester
classes. Students in Madrid for the academic year participate only
once in the orientation, and therefore are only eligible to receive
credit once.
