Summer Courses

Students will take 6 Marquette credits for this program.  The following courses will be available:

 

SPAN 3 Intermediate Spanish 1

SPAN 4 Intermediate Spanish 2

SPAN 82 Grammar Review and Writing

SPAN 83 Advanced Oral Skills

SPAN 100 Peoples and Cultures of Spain

SPAN 182 Advanced Composition and Conversation

 

Depending on their level of Spanish and interests, summer program participants have two academic track options. 

Option 1: (Beginning, Intermediate or Advanced level)

Spanish Language and Communication - 80 total hours - 20 hours weekly

Spanish Language and Conversation Tutoring - 10 total hours (Beginning -
   taught by Resident Director)

Spanish Culture Lectures - 10 hours (Intermediate and Advanced)

   Students attending the Culture lectures will have an exam on the corresponding
   lectures)

Option 1 includes two excursions and at least two cultural visits.

 

Option 2: (Advanced students only)

 

Spanish Language and Communication - 80 total hours - 20 hours weekly

Spanish Culture and Civilization Classes - 20 hours: (taught by the Resident
    Director)
Spanish Culture Lectures - 25 hours

   Students attending the Culture lectures will have an exam on the corresponding
   lectures)

Options 2 includes two excursions and the following cultural visits: Royal Palace, Museo del Prado, Museo de América, and Museo Reina Sofia (required for the culture course).

 

 

Course Descriptions

Spanish Language and Communication

This course consits of four classes daily:

 

Spanish Grammar (20 contact hours)

Practice of Communicative Skills (20 contact hours)

Written Comprehension and Expression (20 contact hours)

Oral Comprehension and Expression (20 contact hours)

 

Instruction is given in three different levels: Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced, separated into several further sections within each level. Extensive use will be made of the Language Laboratory in the lower levels.

 

Spanish Culture Lectures

After the Spanish language classes are over for the day, the program offers lectures on Spanish Culture. Students at the Intermediate and Advanced Levels will have to attend 10 hours of lectures.  Some of these lectures are:

 

- Spain in the 20th century

- Flamenco Music and Culture

- Keys to Spanish Contemporary Culture

- 20th Century Spanish Theatre

- Sociological Aspects of Present Day Spain

- Spanish for Business
